Lee Kang-in’s (22) second-half equaliser denied Real Sociedad the opportunity to move into La Liga’s top three, as Mallorca brought their run of seven straight defeats in the fixture to an end.

Chasing a place in next season’s UEFA Champions League, Sociedad got off to the perfect start against mid-table Mallorca, finding the back of the net through Carlos Fernandez’s strike within three minutes, as the forward found the bottom right-hand corner following David Silva’s expert cutback.

The poor start by the hosts came as no surprise, given their woeful record against Sociedad as of late, losing their last seven meetings and failing to score in each of those defeats.

The chances kept coming for Sociedad, too, and they would have made it two before the break had it not been for Fernandez nodding his headed effort just wide of the right post in pursuit of his second of the afternoon.

Mallorca weren’t without their own opportunities, however, and should have equalised late in the half when Tino Kadewere received the ball on the edge of the area, before unleashing a driven effort towards the bottom corner, only to see his strike flash agonisingly past the post and wide.

With more chances falling their way at the start of the second half, the Pirates soon found themselves level through Kang-in, who ran in behind before finishing past a helpless Alex Remiro from the edge of the box just five minutes after the restart.

Sociedad’s response was impressive, which would have led to a second through Robin Le Normand but for the referee’s decision to rule the goal out for a foul in the build-up. Mallorca rode their luck, given the visitors’ initial reaction to their equaliser, but held on and deservedly so, given how they remained defensively resolute, and even rattled the post through Amath Ndiaye late on.

Sociedad’s afternoon only got worse when Mikel Merino received his marching orders in the 90th minute for a reckless challenge, before the game ended in a frustrating 1-1 draw to extend their current winless run to five games in all competitions, whilst Mallorca did enough to go seven points clear of the drop zone in La Liga.
