Spanish defensive midfielder Sergio Busquets (34) has announced his retirement on international career after appearing 143 times for his national side, where he won a World Cup and one European Championship.

The Barcelona midfielder, who is set to move to MLS at the end of this season had a career spanning more than a decade with La Roja.

Busquets' last action in a Spain shirt was the missed penalty against Morocco in the last 16 of the World Cup in Qatar.

His retirement was something that was expected, and it was confirmed on Friday.

He remains very close to 150 caps with two goals and with an enviable record with not many players winning the biggest championship at national team level and, if that wasn't enough, adding another one at continental level.

Busquets made his debut on April 1 2009 at the Ali Sami Yen stadium in Istanbul against Turkey.

He was 20 years old at the time and Spain won 2-1, a victory that served to lay the foundations for the 2010 tournament in that qualifying campaign.

The midfielder himself played in all seven matches that La Roja played in South Africa.

It was in 2017 that he became a centenarian and, five years later, in November, his fourth World Cup.

In total, he has also played 17 games for the national team in the competition, the same as Andoni Zubizarreta, Fernando Hierro, Iker Casillas, Xavi Hernandez, Andres Iniesta and Sergio Ramos, players who are part of the history of Spanish football, especially his contemporaries.

His fateful farewell contrasts with what happened in 2016, when he scored from the penalty spot in the final of the Confederations Cup despite being opposed by Gianluigi Buffon, one of the best goalkeepers in history.

He may have missed the penalty with his final touch for Spain, but he leaves the team a hero for the national side.
