Monaco avoided an upset as they came from behind to beat struggling Strasbourg 4-3 and keep their dreams of UEFA Champions League football alive. Both teams had the lead in a roller coaster first half, but it was eventually the hosts who grabbed the points, closing the gap up to third-placed Marseille in the process.

Strasbourg, fighting for their Ligue 1 future, were lacklustre and sloppy early on, and nearly found themselves behind when Wissam Ben Yedder wriggled into space and had a shot cleared off the line.

Philippe Clement’s Monaco didn’t have to wait long to open the scoring though, with Vanderson tucking away his first goal of the season by finding the bottom corner from inside the box.

That woke Strasbourg up, and after Morgan Sanson had forced Alexander Nubel into a fine low save, Lebo Mothiba equalised with a towering header before Habib Diallo saw his volley ruled out by VAR for a tight offside.

Frederic Antonetti’s side were ahead before the break though, again profiting from a set piece when Guillermo Maripan headed into his own net, while Matz Sels denied Ben Yedder at the other end.

It had been quite the turnaround for Strasbourg, who had picked up just 11 points from their previous 13 away fixtures, but their hopes of a rare win on the road were destroyed by a much sharper second-half performance from Monaco.

Eliesse Ben Seghir levelled by clattering through a forest of legs after a free-kick into the box wasn’t dealt with, before Edan Diop grabbed his first senior goal, rounding off a rapid counter-attack to put the hosts in front.

This time, there was to be no comeback from the visitors, who found themselves 4-2 down when Youssouf Fofana scored against his former club with a deflected strike. The midfielder was in the thick of the action and was then sent off with 12 minutes remaining, receiving a second yellow card for a foul on Ibrahima Sissoko.

Strasbourg then pulled a goal back in injury time through Habib Diallo but were ultimately unable to capitalise fully on the man advantage, as they stay outside the relegation zone only on goal difference.
