Brighton & Hove Albion recorded their first league double over Wolves since 2016/17 with a superb 6-0 home win as the Seagulls strengthened their push for European qualification.

Brighton showed no signs of weariness after an FA Cup semi-final loss and a 3-1 defeat against Nottingham Forest last time out and the Seagulls raced into a 2-0 lead within 13 minutes.

Danny Welbeck’s clever back-heel first setup Deniz Undav to tap in from close range before an incisive Brighton counter-attack ended with Julio Enciso playing in Pascal Gross, who struck into the top corner.

Wolves' chances of winning just a third away Premier League match in 17 this season quickly evaporated, but Matheus Nunes tried to give the visitors some hope when his powerful shot from 10 yards forced Jason Steele into a low save.

The opportunity failed to spark a response and Brighton scored three goals in a Premier League match for the sixth time this season when Enciso once again teed up Gross and the midfielder volleyed past Jose Sa from the edge of the area.

Welbeck then added to Wolves’ woes before half-time as the striker rose highest to meet Pervis Estupinan’s floated cross and headed into the bottom corner.

Julen Lopetegui made a double change at the break to prevent further damage, but the move was in vain as Wellbeck drilled a low shot past Sa into the bottom corner for his first-ever brace for Brighton.

Wolves' wretched record of not beating any Premier League teams above them on the road was well and truly set to continue after Undav added insult to injury with a clever chip over Sa in the closing stages.

Roberto De Zerbi’s Brighton were in control from the outset, and the Seagulls’ home form of five wins from their last seven at the Amex could be crucial as the south coast side aim to secure European qualification for the first time ever.

Wolves remain eight points outside the relegation places, but another away defeat leaves the Midlands side winless in 10 of their last 11 on the road.
