Romelu Lukaku (29) provided two assists as Inter Milan came back from behind to earn a commanding 3-1 against Lazio at San Siro, handing Napoli the opportunity to win the Serie A title later on Sunday with six matches remaining.

A vital fixture for both sides in their respective bids for European football, fans in Naples were also watching this one intently, as anything but a win for Lazio would give the runaway leaders the chance to lift the Scudetto with a win later in the day.

The teams involved were focused firmly on themselves though, and Lazio stopper Ivan Provedel was showing the kind of form that had earned his side a league-high 18 clean sheets ahead of this game.

Saves from Marcelo Brozovic and Henrikh Mkhitaryan punctuated the early stages, while a reprieve was offered for Lazio when Mkhitaryan’s goal was ruled out for offside.

Inter had been unfortunate not to capitalise on their early dominance, and they were dealt another blow as the Biancocelesti seized the advantage just minutes later.

Francesco Acerbi conceded possession to Felipe Anderson in a dangerous area, and the Brazilian exchanged passes with Mattia Zaccagni before planting his shot into the bottom corner.

Unfazed by falling behind and determined to extend their run of three successive home wins against Lazio, Inter were straight back on the attack. Nicolo Barella and Mkhitaryan saw their attempts fly wide before Lazio closed out the half when Ciro Immobile’s curling shot was excellently saved by André Onana.

Into the Champions League semi-finals and the Coppa Italia final, Inter’s league form has nevertheless left a lot to be desired, and only a strong second-half performance would suffice to put them back into the top six.

The home side launched a barrage of attacks on the Lazio goal, but they were left frustrated by a continuation of an imperious display for Provedel.

However, substitutes promised to provide the breakthrough for the home side, and Lukaku showed great strength to turn and find Lautaro Martinez, who slid in to lift the ball over the goalkeeper and send fans in both the San Siro and Naples into jubilation.

And for all of Inter’s efforts, there was better still on the horizon. With just seven minutes remaining, Lukaku continued his excellent creative display to whip a cross to Robin Gosens at the far post, who acrobatically volleyed past Provedel, and the icing on the cake was supplied in stoppage time with a tap-in from Martinez.

A crucial result for Inter, who move back into the top four, but celebrations will no doubt be even stronger in Campania, where fans will wait with bated breath for Napoli’s matchup with Salernitana, in which a win will bring glory back to Stadio Diego Armando Maradona for the first time in 33 years.
