Sheraldo Becker (27) shone as Union Berlin maintained their position at the top of the Bundesliga with a 2-0 victory over a hapless Wolfsburg side - a result that sees Niko Kovač’s team slip into the relegation places.

Before their second-half flurry of goals, Union began proceedings looking like a side playing with the added pressure of being league leaders. Struggling to mount any real attacks, it was actually the visitors who enjoyed the best of the early chances, but Josip Brekalo was unable to direct his dragged effort on target from inside the penalty area.

Never before had Union topped the Bundesliga table, and while their hopes of lifting the Meisterschale come May remained slim, Urs Fischer’s side did start to show the kind of quality that had taken them to the summit. Theoson-Jordan Siebatcheu threatened the target with a header that flashed just wide, whereas Timo Baumgartl forced a simple save from goalkeeper Koen Casteels, but neither were able to break the deadlock.

Somewhat passive throughout the first half, there was no mistaking Union’s intentions at the start of the second, as the hosts attacked from the off and found an opener 10 minutes after the restart. Becker picked out Jordan’s steaming run into the penalty area, with the Union forward flicking a stooping header beyond Casteels in the Wolfsburg goal.

Having created the first goal, Becker would continue his rich vein of scoring form to all but secure the three points later in the half. Expertly controlling former Wolfsburg man Paul Seguin’s chipped pass with his chest, the Bundesliga’s top-scorer added to his tally with a delicate first-time volley. Union, a club who were in the fifth tier of German football as recently as 2005/06, remain unbeaten so far this season and will stay top of the table heading into next week’s international break.
