Both ATP and WTA Madrid Open continue today, the women's tour has a day's advantage meaning the top seed players are already making their appearance in the Spanish capital. Nevertheless, big names are also starring in today's ATP contests, Andy Murray (35), Dominic Thiem (29) and more. We will bring you the latest updates, highlights and social media posts, all here on our Tennis Tracker.

21:47 CET - The final two games of the day in the Spanish capital are over with Bernabe Zapata Miralles (26) winning a bruising encounter against Mackenzie McDonald (28) in three sets 3-6, 6-3, 7-6, whilst Aslan Karastev (29) beat Laslo Djere (27) 7-6, 7-5.

20:58 CET - Second seed Aryna Sabalenka (24) - one of the favourites for the tournament - has secured her pasage into the next round with a comprehensive 6-4, 6-3 victory over Sorana Cirstea (33).

20:32 CET - Irina-Camelia Begu (32) has seen off the challenge of Karolina Muchova (26) in straight sets 6-4, 7-5. Shelby Rogers (30) is also through, having beaten Ana Bogdan (30) 6-2, 6-2.

19:58 CET - Back to business in Madrid and Dusan Lajovic (32), winner in Bosnia last week, continues his good form with a win over Jason Kubler (29) 6-3, 6-3.

19:32 CET - Away from the on-court action, former world number one Simona Halep (31) has called on the International Tennis Federation (ITF) to give her the chance to clear her name after she was provisionally suspended in October for failing a drugs test.

19:19 CET - Andy Murray (35) is out of the Madrid Open. The Scot was beaten by Andrea Vavassori (27) in straight sets - 6-2, 7-6. Better news for Christopher O'Connell (28), who defeated Filip Krajinovic (31) 6-4, 6-7, 6-2.

18:51 CET - A serene passage into the next round for fifth seed Caroline Garcia (29), who has eased past Yulia Putintseva (28) 6-3, 6-4 in 96 minutes.

18:26 CET - More results in from Madrid with wins for Magda Linette (31), Elise Mertens (27) and Mayar Sherif (26) in the women's draw. In the men's, Marco Cecchinato (30) has advanced, beating Marton Fucsovics (31) 7-6, 6-3.

17:21 CET - Spaniard Paula Badosa defeated Italian Elisabetta Cocciaretto after a two-and-a-half-hour match with a 3-6, 6-4, 4-6 triumph.

16:49 CET - Marcos Giron (29) is the next name into the second round following his 6-2, 7-6 victory over Nuno Borges (26).

16:28 CET - It will be Liudmila Samsonova (24) to face Jelena Ostapenko (25) in the next round of the Madrid Open after the Russian defeated Maryna Zanevska (29) in straight sets 6-2, 6-3. It was also delight for Jan-Lennard Struff (33) after he defeated Lorenzo Sonego (27) 6-3, 6-1.

16:13 CET - Pedro Cachin (28) is through to the next round with a 94-minute, two-set victory over Abedallah Shelbayh (24) winning the first round tie 6-1, 6-4.

15:52 CET - A shock result has happened in Madrid with world number 115 Camila Osorio (21) has beaten Marta Kostyuk (20), nearly 80 places above her in the rankings, 3-6, 6-4, 6-3.

15:34 CET - No such bad luck for Jelena Ostapenko (25) as she sees off world number 58 Linda Fruhvirtova (17) 6-0, 6-3 - the Latvian will face either Liudmila Samsonova (24) or Maryna Zanevska (29), which is currently in progress.

14:49 CET - Back to Madrid and Zhizhen Zhang (26), Yosuke Watanuki (25) and Cristian Garin (26) have all won in straight sets. Elsewhere, sixth seed Coco Gauff (19) needed 76 minutes to take down Spaniard Irene Burillo Escorihuela (25) 6-4, 6-1 whilst there was some good news for the home crowd with Rebeka Masarova (23) upset world number 23 Donna Vekic (26) 6-1, 7-6.

14:05 CET - Slovakian tennis player Andrej Martin (33) has been suspended for 14 months for failing a doping test, the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) said on Thursday.

Martin, who reached a career-high ATP singles ranking of 93 in 2020, tested positive for an anabolic agent at the Bratislava Open in June.

Martin's ban was reduced from the stipulated period of four years after he satisfied an independent tribunal that the offence was not intentional.

"The player asserted that he had played in a floorball tournament... and that the presence of the substance was caused by mistakenly drinking from a team mate's water bottle, identical in appearance to his own," ITIA said in a statement.

13:20 CET - The dream start for teenager Mirra Andreeva (15) as she stuns Beatriz Haddad Maia (26) in straight sets, 7-6, 6-3 - an incredible result for the youngster.

13:17 CET - An early exit for former Madrid Open champion Petra Kvitova (33) after she was beaten by Jule Niemeier (23) 7-6, 6-1.

12:58 CET - Roman Safiullin (25) defeated Nicolas Jarry (27) after a just under two-hour-contest. The Russian was victorious through a 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 result.

12:44 CET - We also have our first result from the women's draw as ninth seed Maria Sakkari (27) needed 96 minutes to take care of Arantxa Rus (32) 6-4, 6-4.

12:38 CET - Play is already well underway in Madrid with our first results of the days filing in. It's a great start to the tournament for the resurgent Dominic Thiem (29), who has beaten Briton Kyle Edmund (28) 6-4, 6-1. Elsewhere, Alexander Shevchenko (22) has defeated world number 49 JJ Wolf (24) 6-4, 6-4 and Tomas Martin Etcheverry (23) made light work of Adrian Mannarino (34) in a 6-4, 6-0 scoreline.

8:00 CET - Mirra Andreeva (15) became the third-youngest player to win a main draw match at a WTA 1000 event by stunning 2021 US Open finalist Leylah Fernandez (20) 6-3 6-4 in the opening round of the Madrid Open on Wednesday.

Andreeva, ranked 194th in the world, saved five of the six break points she faced against world number 49 Fernandez of Canada. She will face Brazil's Beatriz Haddad Maia in the second round later on Thursday at the claycourt tournament.

"It was really tough match for me and I just tried to give my best and to play every point," said Andreeva, who also became only the second 15-year-old to defeat a Top 50 opponent at a WTA 1000 tournament.

7:04 CET - The WTA action is getting quickly exciting in Madrid as world number two and Stuttgart Open runner-up Aryna Sabalenka takes on Sorana Cirstea. They follow fifth-ranked Caroline Garcia's clash with Yulia Putintseva. Teenage sensation and world number six Coco Gauff will also be playing her first round in front of Irene Burillo Escorihuela.

All of this and more as the likes of Maria Sakkari, Paula Badosa, Jelena Ostapenko, Beatriz Haddad Maia  and Magda Linette will be attempting to shine in sunny Madrid.

Meanwhile, in the ATP version, day two is taking off as veteran Andy Murray will be trying to get past the first round for the first time in two tournaments. The Briton will be taking on Andrea Vavassori this afternoon.

Before that however, Dominic Thiem's match against Kyle Edmund will be one of the contests kicking the day off in the morning
