A debut goal for Kubo saw Real Sociedad get their LaLiga season off to the perfect start with a 1-0 victory over Cadiz.

Sociedad were away from home for the sixth successive time at the start of a LaLiga campaign and were looking to collect their third win on opening day. After watching the hosts enjoy an early spell of pressure, the visitors began to take control of the game.

On 24 minutes, Sociedad opened the scoring when new signing Kubo broke Cadiz’s defensive line from a sublime Mikel Merino pass, and fired past home keeper Jeremias Ledesma, a first-half lead they thoroughly deserved.

A scrappy start ensued in the second-half with neither side putting a foothold on the game. Cadiz were gradually being worn down by the visitors’ passing and pressing game which was impressive, before Merino was inches away from getting on the end of an impressive Aritz Elustondo cross to double Sociedad’s advantage.

David Silva, on his 200th LaLiga appearance, also went close twice, but saw both efforts saved by Ledesma.

Cadiz brought on veteran striker Alvaro Negredo to bolster their attacking options, however, it wasn’t enough to deny the visitors all three points as the visitors held on to a win in relative comfort, despite seven minutes of additional time.

A win for Sociedad, but they only scored 40 LaLiga goals last season and their numerous missed chances against a weary Cadiz side will surely remind coach Imanol Alguacil that work is still required in front of goal.
