Giulio Donati’s first Serie A goal in over three years helped Monza earn their first league win against Bologna since 1983 as the Biancorossi edged the Rossoblu to a 1-0 victory.

Despite Bologna and Monza’s mid-table positions, both sides came into this contest as two of Serie A’s in-form sides. Undefeated in four and eyeing a potential European spot after a 2-1 win against rivals Fiorentina last time out, Bologna started on the front foot and Charalampos Lykogiannis’ powerful header from a free-kick was tipped on to the crossbar by Michele Di Gregorio.

Monza soaked up the early pressure and had little possession in the early exchanges, but the only Serie A team to remain unbeaten in 2023 soon showcased their attacking threat as Andrea Petagna weaved into the Bologna area, dribbling past goalkeeper Lukasz Skorupski to tee up Giulio Donati, who fired into the net from close range for his first goal of the season.

The Rossoblù cranked up the intensity after half-time as a clever free-kick routine ended with Michel Aebischer setting up Riccardo Orsolini on the edge of the area, but the midfielder’s whipped effort was gathered by Di Gregorio.

Bologna started to attack with more desperation as the game edged on, yet were prevented from entering dangerous areas by a stubborn Monza defence, and Orsolini’s long-range effort that flew high and wide was symbolic of the host’s frustration.

Bologna eventually threw men forward in hope of a late leveller, which almost backfired as Monza’s Nicolò Rovella and Filippo Ranocchia had two late efforts saved by Skorupski.

The Biancorossi were rewarded with three points for their disciplined defensive performance and Raffaele Palladino will be delighted his side extended their Serie A unbeaten run to seven, whilst also jumping above Bologna in the standings.

It was a disjointed attacking performance from the Rossoblu, who never found their stride in the final third, contributing to just a second home league defeat since October.
