Goals from Stefan Posch and Riccardo Orsolini either side of half time was enough to see Bologna earn a 2-0 win against Spezia and keeping them in the hunt for some continental football next season.

Having led Spezia to top-flight safety last season before joining tonight’s hosts Bologna, there were few better candidates to orchestrate the Rossoblu’s dominant first-half performance than coach Thiago Motta.

They made all of the meaningful moves in front of a passionate home crowd, and Spezia had Bartlomiej Dragowski to thank for keeping the scores level as the minutes rolled on, when he stunningly saved Dutch prodigy Joshua Zirkzee’s left-footed effort.

The Polish custodian then denied Lewis Ferguson’s header from the ensuing corner, but the visitors eventually succumbed to a relentless Bologna minutes later, via an instinctive volley by Posch from close range into the roof of Spezia’s net.

Facing a third straight defeat, the visitors rallied, and Bologna shot-stopper Lukasz Skorupski pulled off a brilliant double save with the interval approaching, doing his part to secure Bologna’s fifth half-time lead at home this campaign.

Immediately after the restart, Posch threw away a golden opportunity to register a brace by sending his shot narrowly wide of the right post, much to the relief of the visitors. The home side then started to sit deeper, provoking Spezia boss Luca Gotti into deploying a plethora of substitutes.

But it was Bologna who made the noise at the other end, with Orsolini blasting home a second with pinpoint accuracy into the top-right corner to all but kill the game.

Spezia struggled to get back into shape thereafter, as Orsolini’s goal proved to be the final blow of the evening. The defeat leaves the Aquilotti languishing just six points above the relegation zone, despite having played an extra game.

Fears of a true relegation battle look set to deepen for Spezia, as they face league leaders Napoli next.

As for Bologna, their hopes of European football seem far-fetched, but they will nonetheless relish a sixth head-to-head unbeaten, which ensured their overnight berth in the top-half of Serie A.
