The home side started the match on home turf very well. They came close on several occasions and could easily have scored a couple of goals before the half-time whistle.
Mileta Rajovic had one of those chances when he found himself through on goal following a perfectly weighted through-ball from David Martinez, but the striker fired the ball into the side netting.
St. Truiden, however, remained a constant threat, and in the 42nd minute, the visitors struck.
Robert-Jan Vanwesemael got past Sofus Johannesen far too easily on the right flank before delivering the ball into the box. David Martinez was caught napping, allowing an unmarked Frederic Soelle to run in and head St. Truiden into the lead.
This marked the beginning of a rough spell for David Martinez. Shortly before the final whistle, the Venezuelan had a massive opportunity inside the Belgian penalty area but blasted the ball well over the bar.
Little changed after the break. The match was completely open, with both teams creating excellent scoring opportunities at regular intervals.
Stanley Iheanacho came very close to getting on the scoresheet for the home side in the 56th minute with a low, long-range shot.
At the other end, Midtjylland goalkeeper Nordin Bakker was kept busy on several occasions after the break, and the home side could easily have suffered a heavier defeat than the one they ultimately faced.
