Bayern Munich continued their astonishing start to the Bundesliga season with a dominant 7-0 win over VfL Bochum at Vonovia Ruhrstadion, seeing the reigning champions return to the summit.

While Bochum came out on top in this fixture last season, they knew the odds of repeating the feat were slim, especially given their numerous injuries. After only four minutes the visitors were ahead when a slick move ended with Kingsley Coman pulling the ball back to Leroy Sané, who found the top right corner with his curling effort. The German’s finish extended Der FCB’s goal-scoring streak away from home in the Bundesliga to 84 matches.

Julian Nagelsmann’s side were at their free-flowing best in attack, and they were also a threat from set-pieces. Defender Matthijs de Ligt headed in from Joshua Kimmich’s corner to double Bayern’s advantage, before Coman rolled the ball in from close range following a mistake from Bochum defender Cristian Gamboa for 3-0.

Summer signing Sadio Mané has hit the ground running since joining from Liverpool, and just a minute after having a goal ruled out for handball, the Senegalese got his name on the scoresheet with a clever finish to give his new club a 4-0 HT lead. Bayern have scored 11 first-half goals in the first three matchdays of this Bundesliga season - more than any team has ever achieved in the same period. It was a similar story for the hosts in the second half, as they conceded a penalty just before the hour mark when Saidy Janko brought Coman down inside the area, and Mané converted the spot-kick to make it 5-0.

There was still plenty of time for Nagelsmann’s side to add to their goal tally and make it an even worse afternoon for the home side. Gamboa’s unfortunate own goal made it 6-0, before substitute Serge Gnabry rounded off the scoring. Following this rout, the Bavarians take their place at the top of the standings - where they may well remain for the duration of the season - while Bochum now prop up the table after a morale-damaging result.
