England Women's head coach Sarina Wiegman has test positive for COVID just hours before her side finish off their Group A games at the European Championships against Northern Ireland in Southampton on Friday night.

The Dutch head coach is set for a spell away from the team as she recovers, the FA has confirmed in a statement.

They said: "England Head Coach Sarina Wiegman has tested positive for Covid and will undertake a period of recovery at the squad’s base camp."

Her England side, who beat Norway by a record scoreline of 8-0 on Monday night, will be led by assistant coach, Arjan Veurink at St Mary's Stadium on Friday night.

Wiegman, whose side sit atop Group A in the Euros and are already set for a quarter-final fixture next week, will have remote contact with her staff and players. She will also be checked regularly to make sure she can be back with her squad as soon as possible.

This is not the first case of COVID within the England camp at the tournament. Arsenal defender Lotte Wubben-Moy (23) missed the game against Norway due to the virus, but is in contention for the clash against the Northern Irish. However, she isolated at home, rather than at the team's base camp.

Elsewhere in Group A, Austria and Norway do battle in Brighton to see who will go through with England to the knockout stages. Norway need to win the game whereas Austria can afford to draw given their superior goal difference.
