One of English football's most heated rivalries returns on Sunday, October 2nd when Manchester City host Manchester United at the Etihad Stadium.

The latest edition of the derby sees two of the Premier League's form teams go head-to-head as the table continues to take an early shape.

City are in touching distance of the summit and have been riding the hot start of star striker Erling Haaland (22), who joined the club from Borussia Dortmund in the summer.

United, meanwhile, have rallied under Erik ten Hag (52) and have managed to put together a four-match win streak in the league following their poor opening to the campaign.

Ahead of what promises to be another entertaining chapter of the story, Flashscore News takes a look at some of the best moments from past Manchester derbies.

Beckham's pin-point free-kick

David Beckham made sure to show off his immaculate ability from free-kicks with his beautiful free-kick against City at Maine Road in 2000.

Around 30 yards from goal is a tricky prospect on its own, but the added difficulty of being from a central area would usually be enough to put players off.

Beckham didn't let any of that faze him, though, as he bent a curling effort over the wall and past goalkeeper Nicky Weaver.

And as an added bonus, the strike proved to be the lone goal of the game and would earn United all three points and bragging rights.

Trouncing at Old Trafford

The 2011 derby at Old Trafford is one that lives long in the memory for Premier League historians, but not so much for United fans.

The Red Devils were thrashed 6-1 on their own patch - their heaviest home defeat for over half a century - with the result the start of momentum swinging the way of their rivals.

Edin Dzeko (36) and Mario Balotelli (32) starred with two goals each, with the latter pulling off the 'Why always me?' celebration which has now become an iconic piece of footage.

Owen tallies in seven-goal thriller

The 2009 derby still stands as one of the best games in Premier League history given the fact seven goals were scored, including a 90th-minute winner from former Liverpool striker Michael Owen.

A topsy-turvy encounter saw both sides locked at three goals apiece into injury time, until Owen latched onto Ryan Giggs' pass before slotting in a cool effort to send Old Trafford into a frenzy.

The match would contribute to what was a strong season for United but not enough to win the title as they fell just one point short of Carlo Ancelotti's (63) Chelsea.

Kompany's title-clincher

The title race in 2012 went down as one of the most exhilarating ever as both Manchester clubs fought right until the last kick of the season.

But a big turning point was when the pair met at the Etihad in late April for a huge six-pointer at the top.

It wasn't the greatest of games for the neutral, but City fans would not care as they watched their side seal a crucial three points courtesy of captain Vincent Kompany (36).

The Belgian defender powered a header past David de Gea (31) on the stroke of half-time, which would be enough to win and go a long way towards securing City their first title in 44 years.

Rooney's jaw-dropping acrobatics

Arguably the most iconic moment and goal in Manchester derby history, this list wouldn't be complete without that stunning overhead kick by Wayne Rooney.

It was late drama and individual brilliance rolled into one at Old Trafford in 2011 as Rooney's ridiculous effort helped United to a narrow 2-1 win.

The former England striker met Nani's deflected cross with such confidence to fire a sublime effort beyond Joe Hart (35), who was left rooted to his goal line.
