When Quique Setien (64) left Barcelona, his former assistant, Eder Sarabia (41), decided to fly to become head coach. His first adventure, at Gerard Pique's Andorra, is not going badly. After promotion to the second division last summer, he is rubbing shoulders with the big guns of the silver division.
Setien, the new coach of Villarreal after the departure of Unai Emery, has had to find a new assistant. And this is none other than the aforementioned Ramiro Amarelle, a Galician who started playing football in the youth ranks of Deportivo de la Coruna, with whom he became Spanish champion in 1996.
But from there he was unable to make the step up to professional football and had to find a life for himself. And he found beach football, where he became a great among the greats. His track record is enviable, both individually and collectively. He collected, among others, trophies for best player in two World Cups (2003 and 2008) and four European Championships (1998, 2000, 2001 and 2003). And with the Spanish national team, he won five European Championships and two World Championship runners-up medals.
When he was no longer physically fit, he decided to retire and train as a coach. And there he is now, facing his great opportunity, the one given to him by Quique Setien, whom he will help both in the tactical aspect and in the relationship and individualised training with the players.
