At the end of the match against Almería, Gerard Piqué (35) received a heartfelt tribute from Barcelona fans. His team-mates gave him a high-five, then he did a lap of honour around the stadium and watched a video of his best images, before taking the floor. "In life, sometimes, to love is to let go."

Those words came from his heart. He had them in mind, for sure, but the words, in tears, came from the deepest part of his being, from that blue and blue blood that his grandfather, Amador Bernabeu, who became vice-president of Barcelona, injected into him.

"I think it was time to give us some space, to give us some air," said Piqué to justify his farewell after thanking team-mates, coaches and club employees. He even thanked the board of directors, who were slightly whistled during his speech.

But the Barça player promised that it was not going to be a final farewell. "This is not a farewell. At the time I decided that we had to make room for each other and I left (for Manchester United), I came back. I am convinced that in the future I will be here again."

His last words to Barcelona fans were, precisely, for his retired grandfather. "My grandfather brought me, I was born and I will die here. Visca el Barça forever!"
