Getafe continued their push for European football with a narrow 1-0 win over Real Sociedad in LaLiga, moving up to sixth in the table with just a third H2H win from their last 12.

Having won the Copa del Rey at the weekend with victory over Atlético Madrid in the final, Sociedad certainly appeared to enjoy the ensuing celebrations.

Judging by their first-half performance, they were certainly feeling the effects as they struggled to exert any authority on the encounter.

Still, they had a fantastic opportunity to open the scoring inside 15 minutes when they were awarded a penalty after Abdel Abqar handled Brais Mendéz’s header.

However, while the latter stepped up to take the spot-kick, he could only hit the post, offering Getafe a major reprieve.

Orri Óskarsson was then denied by David Soria, albeit from a tight angle, before the visitors took the lead shortly before the half-hour mark in fortuitous circumstances.

Juan Iglesias’ hopeful cross into the box found the head of Jon Gorrotxategi, but he could only flick the ball towards goal as it ultimately looped agonisingly over Álex Remiro and into the back of the net.

From then until half time, there were no real opportunities of note, with La Real needing to significantly improve after the break to get anything from the encounter.

Between the start of the second half and the hour mark, Sociedad had made three substitutions, with one of those, Ander Barrenetxea, firing just over the crossbar from inside the area.

Barrenetxea was by far his side’s brightest spark, even though he was a second-half introduction, yet his vibrancy did not translate into many clear-cut chances as Getafe kept their opponents comfortably at arm’s length.

In the end, Getafe never really looked like surrendering their lead, and they are now well on course to finish in the division’s top 10 for the first time since 2019/20.

For Sociedad, meanwhile, this was their first home defeat of 2026, yet given their recent silverware success, they are unlikely to be too upset.

La Real will now be playing UEFA Europa League football next year, regardless of where they finish in the table, so they can now enjoy the remainder of the season without pressure.
