Füchse Berlin face a tough battle to reach the Final Four of the Champions League after they suffered a 34-35 defeat at the hands of Hungarian outfit Veszprem HC in the first leg of their quarter-final after they squandered a five-goal lead in the second half.

Even a five-goal lead with 20 minutes left wasn’t enough for the Germans, as the Hungarians mounted a strong comeback in the closing stages.

Just a week and a half after their triumph in the German Cup, World Handball Player of the Year Mathias Gidsel couldn’t prevent the defeat despite scoring an outstanding 13 goals.

Last year, Berlin lost the Champions League final to SC Magdeburg. After a 35-28 win at Pick Szeged on Wednesday, the defending champions are on track for the semifinals.

Füchse had won both group stage matches against Veszprem, but coach Nicolej Krickau was still expecting a "brutal game". His team started strong and seemed to be in control, but the Hungarians fought back in a dramatic finish and kept their cool when it mattered most.
