Girona started the game on the front foot as they looked to extend their five game unbeaten run, and went close to taking the lead after just 8 minutes as Valentín Castellanos latched onto a cross just outside the six-yard box only for a superb save from Álvaro Fernández to keep his header out. Girona had fallen behind more than any team in La Liga prior to this game but that wasn't to be the case in this game, as Míchel’s men took the lead just after the half hour mark through Toni Villa after he was played through by Aleix García before slotting the ball beyond the goalkeeper.
Espanyol had drawn four of their previous six league games and found themselves level again just after the break as Javi Puado cushioned his effort in the side netting after the ball had bounced around in the Girona penalty area. Periquitos almost added a second after a free-kick was whipped into the box to be met by the head of Joselu who rose highest but the Spanish forward was denied by a strong save from Paulo Gazzaniga.
The Home side had failed to win in LL in six matches but managed to take the lead with just under 15 minutes remaining. Joselu was fastest to react to Brian Oliván’s first time cross as he beat Gazzaniga to the ball to head it into the goal. Girona equalised as the game was into the closing five minutes after a magnificent cross from Yan Couto was powerfully headed home by Yangel Herrera.
