Italy's Filippo Ganna (26) claimed the Hour record by covering 56.792 kilometres at the Grenchen, Switzerland, velodrome on Saturday, according to provisional results.

The two-time time trial world champion bettered the mark of his Ineos-Grenadiers teammate and performance director Daniel Bigham of Britain by 1.244km.

He also beat the 'best human effort' of Chris Boardman from 1996 of 56.375km to unify the record and set officialy the fastest and furthest hour record ever ridden on a bicycle.

Ganna started slow in his effort and was behind Bigham's time in the first 15 minutes, however his pacing strategy was set for this and he pushed on in the second quarter.

As the hour went on, he continued to build a lead and never looked likely to falter in a flawless performance in the pressure cooker atmosphere of the velodrome.

He looked understandably ragged towards the end because of the effort, but still had enough energy to salute the crowd and his support staff.

"I've put so much work into it," a sweaty Ganna told a trackside interviewer.
