A late Robin Le Normand own goal granted Celta Vigo an inspired point in their relegation battle and scuppered their opponents UEFA Champions League (UCL) hopes after they led for 90 minutes through Mikel Oyarzabal.

Despite their lowly league position, Celta boss Carlos Carvalhal believes his side are “closer to the team I would like” after only succumbing to defeat in the dying moments last time out. Like wounded animals, warning signs were loud and clear for the home side inside the first minute as Álex Remiro was forced to save well from AS Roma loanee Carles Pérez.

Injuries have plagued La Real this season, making their third placed position all the more impressive. The return of Oyarzabal on only his third start of the season was to prove timely as he put his side ahead. Sent clear by teammate Takefusa Kubo and with the angle worsening as every second passed he rifled firmly left-footed beating disappointed Iván Villar at his near post.

Carvalhal decided to roll the dice at HT, introducing Haris Seferovic and all of a sudden the home side were inviting all the pressure. They almost succumbed, with a defensive mix up leading to Diego Rico heading the ball over his own goalkeeper. The ball fell to Iago Aspas with the open goal at his mercy, but unbelievably his effort struck the foot of the post.

All of a sudden the game became frantic, with two one-on-one chances at either end being separated by a matter of seconds. First it was Oyarzabal who fired straight at the keeper, before Seferovic missed a glorious opportunity poking wide.

La Real thought they could breathe easy late on as Tapia foolishly was shown two yellow cards in a matter of seconds meaning, but somehow snatched a draw in the dying moments as Robin Le Normand put into his own goal following an Aspas cross.
