Darko Lazović was the star of the game for Hellas Verona as his brace secured a comfortable victory over fellow relegation-threatened side US Cremonese. The win snapped the Gialloblu’s 11-game winless run in Serie A.

Hellas Verona didn’t waste time in establishing their control and looked dominant from the get-go, something that was reflected in the score before the 10-minute mark after Lazović broke the deadlock for the home side with a close-range strike. The hosts didn’t step their foot off the gas despite the early goal and took advantage of Cremonese’s passive approach, doubling their lead midway through the first half. Lazović found the back of the net once again, but all credit goes to Josh Doig, who carried the ball from one box to the other before setting up the Serbia international with a precise pass. The visitors looked stunned and failed to generate anything remotely dangerous, ensuring a deserved two-goal advantage for the home side heading into the break.

Cremonese attempted to play with more pace and intensity in the second half, but the results were less than encouraging, and instead, Verona remained in absolute control of the contest with Lazović as the team’s biggest threat. In fact, the 32-year-old came close to completing his hat-trick with a free-kick that went slightly wide early in the second half. The visitors tried to produce a spark with the introduction of David Okereke, Felix Afena-Gyan, and Santiago Ascacibar, but the moves had little effect. The lack of ideas in the final third was alarming for the visitors, allowing Verona to remain conservative in the latter stages.

The win sees the Gialloblu leapfrog their opponents and leave the foot of the table, yet they stay in the relegation zone, six points adrift of safety. Meanwhile, the Grigiorossi remain winless in 17 top-flight matches and fall to the bottom of the table, extending their losing streak to three matches in the process.
