Uruguay beat Ghana in a must-win end to the group stage but it wasn't enough to go through to the round of 16. South Korea's late winner against Portugal meant that the Koreans edged above Uruguay on goals scored in the tournament. Ghana and Uruguay thus exit the tournament.

18:11 CET: Well, what a mad affair that was. Yet more drama in this brilliant end to the group stage in Qatar.

Both teams can be proud of their efforts in this match. Unfortunately for Ghana, they just couldn't hit the back of the net despite a few good chances, including a penalty that was missed.

For Uruguay, they did what they couldn't do in their first two matches - score, and twice. However, South Korea's surprise win over Portugal meant that they needed one more goal to go through and they just couldn't find it.

In the end, Portugal and South Korea both advance from Group H into the round of 16.

100': It's a weak effort, straight at the keeper. And the referee calls full-time. Uruguay are out. Ghana are out. Wow, what an end to that one. Players protesting, Suarez in tears. It's all happening but all that matters now - South Korea advance along with Portugal.

99': Last chance for Uruguay here. Free kick in range.

98': Substitution for Ghana. Kudus is off, Fatawu on.

97': Coates is found by Cavani in front of goal but he pokes it wide.

96': Stunning saves by both keepers, it's hard to believe.

95': End-to-end stuff here! Shots flying at either end! This is breathless stuff.

93': Cavani goes down in the box looking for a penalty! The referee waves it away.

LIVE from South Korea - Portugal: The other match has now finished and South Korea have won 2-1. The time is ticking here - about six minutes left!

90': There will be eight minutes added on here. Uruguay need just one goal, Ghana need two. As it stands, they are both heading home, however.

89': Oh my! Cavani had almost done it with a spectacular header. He's offside anyway.

87': Well, this is intriguing. As it stands, both these teams are going home thanks to the goal by South Korea. Uruguay have taken their key attackers off already - can they get another goal without them?

87': Coates picks up a yellow. Sulemanna is also booked.

LIVE from South Korea - Portugal: GOAL! Here's a twist! South Korea have scored! They now lead Portugal 2-1. And that means that South Korea have moved above Uruguay on goals scored! Oh my, just as they thought it was done, the Uruguayans are now in trouble here.

82': Kudus beats his marker and unleashes a thunderbolt of a shot from the edge of the box. Sergio Rochet sees the ball late but does well to stop it from going into the bottom left corner. Great save. Again, so close yet so far for Ghana.

80': A double swap by Uruguay. The game's only goalscorer, De Arrascaeta, and Nunez are off. Gomez and Conobbio are on.

79': It's another huge chance for Ghana but Semenyo pulls his shot wide of the post. They haven't been good in front of goal tonight, unfortunately.

76': Just a quarter of an hour left here. Ghana need a goal and then... another! It's still 1-1 in the group's other match. As it stands, Uruguay are going through with Portugal.

72': Antoine Semenyo replaces Inaki Williams for Ghana.

70': Valverde hits a lovely strike from range but the keeper deals with the dipping shot. Valverde has been pretty quiet tonight.

66': Uruguay make a double change - Suarez and Pellistri have been taken off. Cavani and De la Cruz come on. That was a good hour's play by Suarez, he was involved in both goals and it's probably wise to get him off now as he's on a yellow.

65': Pellistri has found the ball and a little pocket of space inside the Ghanaian box but he rifles his shot just wide. Big let off. That should have hit the target at least.

63': After an hour, it's fair to say this has been a pretty even contest, statistically speaking. Possession is about halved and Uruguay have had five shots to Ghana's four. But look at the score board, only one team has taken their chances so far.

60': It's a yellow card for Luis Suarez. That seems inevitable, really.

59': No penalty. Seems like the right decision.

58': What is it about these two teams and penalties? The referee is reviewing the foul on the monitor. The Ghanaian defender tackles Nunez in a clumsy manner but it's not an obvious foul.

57': Nunez has gone down in the box and the referee is checking it.

54': Salisu laid one on Suarez there. Not dirty just a heavy tackle. The game has slowed down some this half which suits Uruguay, they have their lead.

46': Almost an instant impact Bukari as he slashes a shot across the face of goal and Kudus almost connects with it but he's offside anyway. That's what Ghana need, a quick goal.

45': We are back for the second half and Ghana have taken both the Ayew brothers off, Andre and Jordan. In their places are Bukari and Sulemana. Ghana kick off.

First Half

17:04 CET: Looking at the Momentum graphic below, you can see the narrative of this first half. Ghana started well, leading up to that missed penalty in the 21st minute. But since then, it's been all Uruguay. The Ghanaians need to find a way to forget that first half, forget the score, and get themselves back into a position of control. Stay tuned for the second half.

The story of the first half

Halftime at South Korea - Portugal: South Korea will be the happier of the two teams at the break. They have ridden their luck since equalising through Kim Young-Gwon in the 27th minute and their goalkeeper has been called into action three times to keep the scores level. Portugal, who took the lead through Ricardo Horta early on, are pushing for another goal, but South Korea, who have to win this to have any chance of qualifying, have it all to play for in the second half.

16:55 CET: Well, we wondered if it would be dramatic and it certainly has been! After a pretty cagey opening, Ghana were gifted a chance to take the lead with a penalty after 20 minutes. Unfortunately for them, Jordan Ayew couldn't convert it.

That woke the Uruguayans up it seemed and, in particular, Giorgian De Arrascaeta. There was a lot of noise about getting him in the starting XI and he's delivered by scoring Uruguay's two goals. Ghana need to find a way of getting back into this game quickly because, as it stands, they are going out of this tournament.

54': That will be halftime here. Stay tuned for the half's stats.

46': There will be eight minutes added on here - makes sense, the VAR check, two goals and a couple of medical moments.

43': A few tasty tackling are flying in now.

36': Well the star of the show so far is certainly Giorgian De Arrascaeta. There was a lot of pressure in the local media to get him in the starting XI and he's delivered by scoring Uruguay's only two goals at the World Cup so far. Luis Suarez has had a hand in both, too - pun intended. Can Ghana get back into this one and keep their tournament alive?

34': Rodrigo Bentancur is being replaced. He seems to have picked up an injury. That's a blow to Uruguay but they are in a strong position now. Matias Vecino comes on.

32': GOAL! It's De Arrascaeta again! Can you believe it? The ball falls to De Arrascaeta after Suarez plays a lofted pass in the box and he hits it first time and fiercely. It fizzes underneath the keeper. What a finish!

LIVE from South Korea - Portugal: South Korea have levelled their match! 1-1 there now. As it stands, Uruguay are going through with Portugal.

26': GOAL! Giorgian De Arrascaeta for Uruguay! Suarez got a shot away but the keeper parries it into danger but De Arrascaeta is the first man there and he nods it over the line.

23': Nunez breaks through and artfully lifts the ball over the keeper but Salisu is sweeping in behind and clears it off the line. Close!

22': Well, we knew it would be dramatic! Strap in for the next twist in this tale. I have a feeling this could be an entertaining affair.

21': Andre Ayew steps up... and MISSES! He shoots low to the right but Rochet picks correctly and saves it comfortably. That was a bad penalty to be fair.

20': Darwin Nunez picks up a yellow for his protestations.

19': Huge drama here and it's poetic that Ghana have a penalty against Uruguay just like in 2010!

18': It's a penalty! He's given a penalty to Ghana after reviewing it on the screen.

17': This is interesting. The referee is going to take a look at a possible penalty claim for Ghana that was initially ruled out for offside.

15': First big chance there and falls to Ghana. Kudus goes in on goal and the keeper takes him out. But he's offside. Looks like a penalty review, too.

10': Pretty cagey opening 10 minutes here. No shots for either side. It hasn't been physical just nervy. Uruguay have struggled to create this World Cup, they have yet to score. Ghana, meanwhile have scored and conceded five time each! Chalk and cheese, really.

LIVE from South Korea - Portugal: There's been an early breakthrough in the group's other game. Portugal has gone ahead early. 1-0. That makes life tough for South Korea but it suits both these two teams. Portugal is already through, if they win, Uruguay know that a win sends them through, while Ghana would only need not to lose.

7': Fairly cagey start here, can

2': The first feisty tackle of this loaded affair is courtesy of Mohammed Kudus on Giminez. I wonder if that's a sign of things to come. Could have been a booking.

1': Uruguay get this must-win match for them underway.

Pre Match

15:58 CET: Ghana are dressed in all white, Uruguay are in sky blue and black.

15:54 CET: The teams are out on the pitch at the Al Janoub Stadium for the anthems. The game's referee will be D. Siebert of Germany.

15:49 CET: Welcome to our live text updates for the crucial last-round Group H match between Ghana and Uruguay. To remind you, Uruguay HAVE TO win the match if they wish to progress.

Ghana have the upper hand in the standings and don't have to win in order to go through but, we all know they will want revenge for that infamous match in 2010.

In the group's other match, Portgual - who have already confirmed their spot in the last 16 - take on South Korea, who could still qualify with a win.

It promises to be another enthralling day of football, stay tuned!

Team News

Uruguay give a start to veteran striker Luis Suarez and have dropped captain Diego Godin from their defence for this must-win match.

Suarez, playing in his fourth World Cup, will be at the centre of a three-man attack with Darwin Nunez and Facundo Pellistri, who gets a start for the second time, in a match the South Americans have to win to avoid their first group stage exit since 2002.

Ghana, who will go through to the last 16 with a win, make two changes to the team that beat South Korea 3-2, restoring Alidu Seidu and Baba Rahman to the fullback positions they played in during the opening game against Portugal, in place of Tariq Lamptey and Gideon Mensah.

Ghana: Lawrence Ati-Zigi, Alidu Seidu, Daniel Amartey, Mohammed Salisu, Baba Rahman, Thomas Partey, Salis Abdul Samed, Mohammed Kudus, Andre Ayew, Jordan Ayew, Inaki Williams

Uruguay: Sergio Rochet, Sebastian Coates, Giorgian de Arrascaeta, Jose Maria Gimenez, Guillermo Varela, Mathias Olivera, Rodrigo Bentancur, Facundo Pellistri, Federico Valverde, Luis Suarez, Darwin Nunez.

Introduction

Luis Suarez has had many controversial moments in his career and the handball that denied Ghana a chance at reaching the quarter-finals of the 2010 World Cup is right up there.

Both sides have had their say on the incident in the build-up to Friday's Group H game and the motivation of revenge can be felt across the Black Stars squad as well as back home in Ghana.

The African side know a point should be enough to see them into the last 16 and for Uruguay, they have to win in order to have any chance of qualifying.
