Morocco became the first African side in history to reach the semi-finals of the World Cup, when they shut out Portugal to claim an incredible 1-0 victory. Youssef En-Nesyri scored the all-important goal in the first half with a towering header, and Portugal were unable to carve open a truly astonishing Moroccan defence.

What an unbelievable first game we have just witnessed. History has been made in Qatar. Check out our report of this jaw-dropping match.

Up next, is a mouthwateringly appealing contest between England and France. The winner of that, will take on Morocco. We will see you there. What a World Cup this has been.

Morocco 1-0 Portugal

Sometimes in football, you can't quite believe what you are seeing. Morocco are creating history in front of our very eyes, and every single victory on their way to this point, they have absolutely fully deserved. They have completely nullified Portugal in this game, and also Spain in the previous round. They limit their opponents to such few clear-cut chances. It's as good a defensive performance as you are ever likely to see and they are now the first African side to ever reach a World Cup semi-final. It is just sensational - they are sensational. Special mention to Amrabat by the way. That man has been the player of the tournament for me. It's so obvious to point out the likes of Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe, but what he has done at the heart of their midfield has been truly special. There is no way that he doesn't play for one of the world's biggest clubs in the future.

However, it is heartbreak for Portugal. Ronaldo was in floods of tears as he walked off into the dressing room. His last ever World Cup, and it has ended like that. No World Cup trophy for him. Portugal tried, and tried, and tried. But they just couldn't find a way through that Moroccan wall. They had a few chances that they undoubtedly should have done better with, but you know what, all the credit in the world has to go to Morocco today. It is their moment. Portugal threw everything that had at it, but it just wasn't enough.

Second Half

99': MOROCCO HAVE DONE! GOODNESS ME, THEY HAVE DONE IT! THEY HAVE BEATEN PORTUGAL AND ARE INTO THE SEMI FINALS OF THE WORLD CUP! HISTORY MAKERS!

98': PEPE MISSES! COMPLETELY FREE HEADER FROM A CROSS, AND HE PUTS IT WIDE! SUCH DRAMA RIGHT AT THE END!

96': MOROCCO MISS A HUGE CHANCE TO WRAP THIS GAME UP! ABOUKHLAL IS ONE ON ONE WITH THE KEEPER AFTER A LONG BALL, BUT HE DINKS HIS EFFORT STRAIGHT AT COSTA! SUCH A POOR FINISH!

95': This is nerve-wracking stuff. Portugal are throwing balls into the box desperately, but no luck. Morocco keep repelling them.

93': RED CARD! Is this a twist in the tale? Substitute Cheddira is sent off after a second yellow card in his 20 minute cameo for a foul on Fernandes. Five minutes left.

91': RONALDO! NO! Good chance for Ronaldo, who finds some space in behind Morocco, but his shot is weak and the keeper saves.

89': Tick tock, tick tock. Portugal just can't find an opening. All the credit in the world to Morocco. Miraculous defensive performance.

83': HUGE SAVE FROM BOUNOU! Felix lashes a vicious shot from the edge of the area, but the goalkeeper tips over brilliantly. All came from a Moroccan mistake in defence.

81': Morocco are taking off Ziyech and Boufal, their replacements are Zakaria Aboukhlal and Yahya Jabrane .

80': Portugal bring on Ricardo Horta for Dalot.

76': WHAT A SCINTILLATING COUNTER ATTACK FROM MOROCCO, BUT THEY CAN'T PUT THE FINISHING TOUCHES ON IT! Would have been a mouthwatering goal, but Cheddira isn't able to execute the final ball when frankly, he really should have.

75': Portugal are probing, probing, probing, but can't find a way through this wall of a Moroccan defence.

69': Double sub for Portugal now. Rafael Leao and Vitinha on for Otavio and Ramos.

65': Two changes for Morocco. The goalscorer En-Nesyri and Amallah are off, Badr Benoun and Walid Cheddira are on.

64': Oh my god, that is so close. Fernandes is fuming. The midfielder puts a shot from the edge of the area just millimetres over the bar. It was so close.

58': Good chance for Portugal, but Ramos can't control his header and puts it wide.

57': Heartbreaking for Saiss and Morocco. The captain is stretchered off with an injury. They will miss him. Achraf Dari is his replacement.

51': Right then. Cometh the hour (near enough), cometh the man. Cristiano Ronaldo is on, along with Joao Cancelo. Guerreiro and Neves are off.

50': Ooooh, Ziyech's free kick is whipped in, and it seems to go untouched by everyone, forcing Costa into a reflex save.

45': The second half begins. Morocco are 45 minutes away from history.

Half Time

Morocco have been utterly excellent in that first half. They have looked so solid at the back, with such a good defensive shape. Their opponents just haven't been allowed a real sniff on their goal. They've displayed great composure too, with lots of quality on the ball. Portugal just cannot find any rhythm or momentum in this contest. Morocco are doing a proper job on them. En-Nesyri leapt like a salmon for the goal, but Costa will be gutted with his error. If he stayed on his line, it would have been a comfortable save. What can Portugal do to turn this game around?

First Half

49': And that is half-time. What an end to those 45 minutes. Portugal are protesting that they should have had a penalty after Fernandes went down in the box just before half time, but the referee pushes them away. It did look like he went down really easily.

48': ATTIAT-ALLAH SLASHES WIDE! This game has suddenly livened up. It is a stunning counter attack from Morocco, but he just can't compose himself in front of goal and misses the target from a great position.

44': WHAT AN EFFORT! Bruno smashes a stunning effort from outside of the box onto the frame of the goal. So close to an instant reply.

42': MOROCCO STRIKE! AND YOU KNOW WHAT, THEY DESERVE IT! 1-0! EN-NESYRI HEADS HOME WITH A TOWERING LEAP ABOVE A STATIC RUBEN DIAS, BUT COSTA HAS MADE A HOWLER THERE. HE COMES OUT OF GOAL BUT TOTALLY MISSES THE BALL, AND LEAVES THE GOAL GAPING FOR THE STRIKER. BUT EN-NESYRI WON'T CARE A BIT! MOROCCO LEAD.

35': Amallah skies a bouncing ball over the bar. It wasn't the easiest chance, but good football from Morocco nonetheless.

31': So, so close. Felix's strike takes a wicked deflection off a Moroccan defender, and just skims the woodwork. Portugal close to taking the lead there with a slice of fortune.

24': Morocco are looking very confident so far. They are playing some neat football on the ball, and not letting Portugal create many chances.

7': Oh, that's a really big chance for Morocco. En-Nesyri has a free header from a corner, but puts it over. Really has to be hitting the target. A couple of early headed chances for both sides.

5': Felix has a header saved by Bounou from a free kick. Comfortable stop.

0': And we are underway. Portugal get the game started.

The players are coming out. We are close to kick off. Cannot wait.
