Spain's young side ran rings around a poor Costa Rica, racking up seven goals in the process to notch up their biggest win in their World Cup history. Their goals came from Gavi, Ferran Torres, Dani Olmo, Alvaro Morata, Carlos Soler and Marco Asensio.

Full Time: Spain 7 Costa Rica 0

19:03 CET: One of the most impressive performances in recent World Cup history as Spain laid down a marker to their rivals in this comprehensive victory. The win was their biggest in their history at this tournament and Gavi's goal was by the youngest player to score for Spain at a World Cup.

The match stats make for sobering reading for Costa Rica, who failed to get away a single shot in the game and had just 18% possession.

Second Half

18:54 CET: In all that chaos, there was eight minutes of added time, we have played four of them.

18:52 CET: It's MAGNIFICENT, it's SEVEN - MORATA!

Alvaro Morata gets in on the act with a lovely finish into the near post corner, past the luckless Navas, who really hasn't played as badly as the scoreline suggests.

18:49 CET: SOLER ON THE SCORESHEET! It's SIX!

From a rebound, Carlos Soler is quickest to it and that will probably complete the rout. A good day at the office for Spain.

18:47 CET: Breaking news! Unai Simon in the Spain goal has had a touch of the ball. His first in a long, long time.

18:41 CET: Into the closing stages of this one and Spain continue to flood forward. Nico Williams crosses a wicked delivery into the box which Costa Rica struggle to deal with before Alvaro Morata forces Keylor Navas into a sharp save. Costa Rica will need to go back to the drawing board after this tomorrow.

18:37 CET: Spain's shot map is a great way to show off how good they have been. Costa Rica have not had a shot yet, so there isn't much use in showing theirs.

18:34 CET: GAVI GOAL! It's FIVE for Spain!

Morata sets up the teenage star and he volleys in off the post to score the fifth goal of the game. A truly dominant display from the Spaniards.

18:32 CET: The substitutions and stoppages have taken the sting out of this game - the four Spain goals may have played a part - and the tempo has gone from this. Costa Rica make another change, this time taking off Celso Borges for Brandon Aguillera.

18:29 CET: Athletic Bilbao's Nico Williams is on the pitch, he has replaced the second goalscorer Marco Asensio. Twenty minutes to go.

18:24 CET: Alvaro Morata spurns a big chance to add to Spain's lead but can only fire the ball wide of the mark. Double change for Spain as Koke and Alejandro Balde are on the pitch for Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba.

18:21 CET: A double change for Costa Rica as the 'fresh legs' of Bryan Ruiz comes on for Jewison Bennette and Alvaro Zamora is brought on for Anthony Contreras.

18:17 CET: There will be no hat-trick for Torres tonight as he is replaced in the 57th minute by Alvaro Morata. Pedri's shift is also done for the day, coming on in his place is PSG's Carlos Soler.

18:14 CET: TORRES AT THE DOUBLE - IT'S FOUR FOR SPAIN!

Torres, having already scored from the spot, finds the ball in the box, turns well and finishes low past Keylor Navas. It feels like a question of how many now for Spain.

18:08 CET: Spain back at it but this time it's different. A lung-busting run from Cesar Azpilicueta (33) of around 40 metres sets up Asensio, but he can only fire over from the edge of the box.

18:07 CET: They have done on thing to mix things up, bringing on Kendall Weston for Carlos Martinez.

18:05 CET: Costa Rica kick the second half off in Doha. Is there anything they can do to turn this game around?

Half Time: Spain 3 Costa Rica 0

17:53 CET: Ferran Torres' calm penalty put the icing on the cake for Spain in the first half, he is yet to miss from the spot in his career.

17:51 CET: A dominant display from the 2010 champions, who have shown class and composure to boss Costa Rica. Cant the Central American side do anything to change the momentum at the break?

Here are all the match stats - something we have spoken a lot about in the first half - from StatsPerform. Not a pretty sight for those in blue, white and red.

First Half

17:50 CET: Spain break through again just before the whistle, but this Asensio can't keep his effort down when well placed on his left foot.

17:45 CET: We are into stoppage time in the first half and Costa Rica look ready for a break.

17:37 CET: Back to the stats, and it really has been a half to forget for Costa Rica. With a few minutes left in the first period, they are yet to register a shot, a corner or a save in the game and have completed just 60 passes in 37 minutes.

17:33 CET: 3-0 up and cruising - our momentum stat shows a glorious start to the World Cup for Spain. Look away now, Costa Rica fans.

17:30 CET: And Ferran Torres makes no mistake - 3-0 to Spain!

17:30 CET: Jordi Alba is fouled in the box and it's a clear penalty to Spain.

17:27 CET: This has been dominant from Spain so far, they have bossed every facet of this game in the opening 30 minutes. Costa Rica look like they are suffocating out there.

17:21 CET: ASENSIO! 2-0 SPAIN!

Jordi Alba provides a lovely cross for Marco Asensio to produce a really composed finish, doubling the lead for Spain. They are already turning on the style here in Al Thumama Stadium.

17:18 CET: Costa Rica have completed a few more passes since the goal and have settled, but the three Barcelona players in midfield - Gavi, Pedri and Sergio Busquets, are running the show. Quelle surprise.

17:11: HE DIDN'T NEED A SECOND INVITATION! SPAIN TAKE THE LEAD THROUGH DANI OLMO!

It is a very Spain goal from yesteryear that breaks the deadlock. Some intricate play around the box sets Olmo free and he dinks an effort over the helpless Keylor Navas for a deserved lead.

17:10 CET: With 10 minutes gone, the possession stat is frankly frightening. Spain have had 88% of the ball so far. 88%. Costa Rica have completed just eight passes.

17:08 CET: Now it's the turn of Marco Asensio to go close - his poked effort just sneaks past the right hand post of Keylor Navas, who was at full strength to try and save that shot. Still 0-0, but Spain well on top.

17:04 CET: First big chance falls the way of Spain and Dani Olmo in the fourth minute. A delicious ball from the left finds the RB Leipzig player in space just a few yards out, but his shot flashes across the goal and goes behind for a goal kick. Costa Rica will need to defend better than that if they are to get anything out of today's game.

17:00 CET: It will be Spain to get us going in this one, in what will be a big game in Group E given today's earlier shock win for Japan over Germany.

Pre-match

16:55 CET: Both teams have made their way out onto the field at Al Thumama Stadium in Doha and now we will - as tradition - have the anthems.

16:30 CET: With 30 minutes to go before kick-off, whet your appetite for tonight's late game between Belgium and Canada from 20:00 CET with an exclusive interview with Candian defender Steven Vitoria. The centre back speaks of his connection with Portugal as well as why no one should think Canada are in Qatar just to make the numbers up. Check it out now.

Team News

Marco Asensio (26) will lead Spain's front line in their opening World Cup match against Costa Rica on Wednesday and manager Luis Enrique has put Rodri (26), usually a midfielder for Manchester City, in the centre of defence.

Asensio has struggled to get playing time at Real Madrid due to injuries and intense competition but will front the Spanish attack while Alvaro Morata (30) is on the bench.

As well as Rodri in the middle of defence, Luis Enrique chose Chelsea's Cesar Azpilicueta as right back, putting the 33 year-old to the test against Costa Rica's counter-attacking.

Costa Rica coach Luis Fernando Suarez chose a familiar-looking starting 11 with former Arsenal striker Joel Campbell (30) and Anthony Contreras (22) leading the attack.

Spain: Unai Simon, Cesar Azpilicueta, Aymeric Laporte, Rodri Hernandez, Jordi Alba, Sergio Busquets, Gavi, Pedri Gonzalez, Ferran Torres, Marco Asensio, Dani Olmo

Costa Rica: Keylor Navas, Bryan Oviedo, Francisco Calvo, Oscar Duarte, Keysher Fuller, Jewison Bennette, Yeltsin Tejeda, Celso Borges, Carlos Martinez, Joel Campbell, Anthony Contreras
