Match statistics

First half result: 0:4.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, this was Liverpool's biggest ever win at Old Trafford, trumping a 5-2 victory way back in 1936. The home side had to do without injured defender Raphael Varane and without him, their defence looked helpless against the sheer intensity of Liverpool's front line. Salah was the man again, scoring a hat-trick after Naby Keita and Diogo Jota had made it 2-0.

Cristiano Ronaldo's statement the day before the match - telling his critics that he would silence them by winning trophies with United - looked really foolish, much to the delight of the Reds fans.

Liverpool were all over their opponents, helped by Paul Pogba's red card in the 60th minute.

At the time, Liverpool were well and truly in a title race and gave their rivals an early indication that they were up for it. In the first half, United were totally run over, with Salah again on the scoresheet. The Egyptian assisted the first goal, scored the second in the 22nd minute - and the game was virtually over.

United started without Ronaldo, who was mourning the loss of his newborn son.

The away side suffered a seriously damaging loss in the fight for a Champions League slot, but in the end, they had to settle for Europa League qualification. Interim manager Ralf Rangnick spoke about the debacle and advised his successor to bring in at least six new players in the summer. Club legend Gary Neville also claimed he'd never seen such a poor game from Manchester United.
