Morten Wieghorst has decided to end his reign as assistant coach of the Danish national team.

When the contract expires in June 2026, it will not be extended, and thus six years as assistant coach for first Kasper Hjulmand and then Brian Riemer will come to an end.

"I have been resolved about this decision for a while", says Morten Wieghorst to dr.dk.

"Unfortunately, I will not finish with a final round tournament, and many of us are really sad and disappointed about that, but that is how it is."

When Kasper Hjulmand stopped as head coach after the 2024 European Championship final round, Morten Wieghorst was promoted to the position of interim head coach of the A-national team.

However, he was forced to take a sick leave with stress symptoms, with Lars Knudsen taking over his role. Brian Riemer was later hired as permanent head coach, and after his illness, Morten Wieghorst was assigned as assistant.

Wieghorst does not hide the fact that it has been a great privilege for him to work with the Danish men's national team.

"I love working with the players, the most talented in Denmark. I love working with the entire staff. We have had a fantastic collaboration", he says.

"There is a very special spirit in and around the national team, and I have had almost six good years with great experiences. Also disappointments, but mostly great experiences and great achievements."
