Napoli come from behind to leave Lazio feeling Sarri

Napoli came from behind in Rome to defeat Lazio 2-1 and move to the top of the Serie A table, as the in-form Khvicha Kvaratskhelia struck the winner at the Stadio Olimpico.

Lazio looked to bounce back from conceding a late equaliser to Sampdoria last time out, and the players duly responded by opening the scoring after four minutes. Mattia Zaccagni had time to control and turn on the edge of the box before his fierce drive evaded Alex Meret’s outstretched hand and found the bottom corner.

It was Napoli who would go on to control the game despite conceding so early, but they would have to wait until the 37th minute to level the match in bizarre fashion. It appeared Ivan Provedel had managed to swat Kim Min-Jae’s header away as play continued but eventually, the referee held up his watch to signal that the ball had crossed the line to the fury of the Lazio players, but replays showed it was the right decision by the finest of margins.

The away side were dominant after the break as Victor Osimhen hit the post and Kvaratskhelia somehow blazed over from six yards out, but the Georgian would redeem himself on the hour mark with a thunderous finish from the edge of the box to give Napoli the lead.

Despite the vociferous home crowd cheering them on, Lazio failed to create any clear-cut chances as they tried to get back into the game, while a couple of half-hearted penalty shouts were swiftly waved away by the referee. The result means Lazio’s early title ambitions are waning after taking just one point from their previous two games, despite leading in both.
