The Netherlands started the match strongly with a wonderful early goal by Cody Gakpo (23) but from that moment they barely managed to threaten in what was a flat performance. Ecuador, on the other hand, fought back strongly from a poor start and deserved the point earned and even looked the more likely to win. The 1-1 draw leaves the teams equal top in Group A. The result means that hosts Qatar are officially knocked out of the tournament with Senegal, Ecuador and the Netherlands all able to progress to the next phase.

Looking at the full-time stats analysis below, it is easy to see that Ecuador created far more than the Netherlands today.

Before the match, the Dutch would have had their eyes set on a victory but based on the balance of play throughout the game, they were lucky to escape with a draw in the end.

It's not panic time for Louis Van Gaal and his side just yet, though, as the draw leaves them in a comfortable position to advance to the round of 16 provided they beat Qatar, who are now eliminated.

Ecuador will next face Senegal in what promises to be a winner-takes-all match.

18:56 CETFULL-TIME: That's the end here. The match has petered out to some degree and the Dutch have really disappointed since their early goal. Stay tuned for the match stats.

18:52 CET: Noppert is almost caught out in possession there as Rodriguez charges him down but his block goes out for a goal-kick. That sums up this second half, really. Ecuador have been more urgent and up for it.

18:51 CET: There will be six added minutes in this match.

18:49 CET: Valencia is down for some medical treatment and Ecuador will make a double change.

Romario Ibarra is on for Gonzalo Plata. Kevin Rodriguez replaces Valencia, who is stretchered off, let's hope it's not a bad injury.

18:46 CET: Nathan Ake is hacked down by Moises Caicedo as he surges forward and the Ecuador player is very lucky not to get booked there. The referee is being quite generous today.

18:40 CET: A double change for the Netherlands as they look to get back into the game. Teun Koopmeiners is going off for Marten de Roon. Goalscorer Cody Gakpo is being replaced by the fresh legs of Wout Weghorst.

18:36 CET: With 15 minutes to go, it's fair to say that the Dutch need to find another gear. They have struggled to create and keep coughing the ball up to Ecuador, who look the more likely to find a winner.

18:35 CET: Ecuador make a change: Michael Estrada is replaced by Jeremy Sarmiento.

18:34 CET: Gakpo gets a chance to lob the keeper but he's offside anyway.

18:31 CET: Klaassen departs the field of play to be replaced by Steven Berghuis (Netherlands).

18:28 CET: The Momentum graphic below shows you how Ecuador have sustained the better spells of attacking pressure in this match so far. They have had 11 shots to the Netherlands' two. Credit to Ecuador, they have been great since going behind early.

18:20 CET: Gonzalo Plata absolutely rattles the crossbar with a zinger. The Dutch are really on the back foot after that equaliser. They need to find a way back into the match before Ecuador run away with it.

18:18 CET: Jhegson Mendez (Ecuador) commits a foul and is shown a yellow card without any hesitation from the referee. That's the first card of the match and Mendez's second of the tournament, so he will miss their next game.

18:10 CET: GOAL! Valencia for Ecuador! That was a real poachers goal by Enner Valencia - his third of the World Cup. He was the only one who followed in that shot and Noppert's parry fell right on his toe. They deserve that equaliser.

18:07 CET: Below you can see the average positions of the Dutch side in the first half. It's interesting to see how crowded they were on the right where Gakpo was often dropping to pick up the ball. Incidentally, that's the same side Ecuador were targeting in attack.

18:04 CET: The teams are emerging for the second half and it looks like Memphis Depay will be coming on for the Netherlands. Steven Bergwijn departs, he was pretty ineffective in the first half.

18:00 CET: Looking at Ecuador's attacking thirds for the first half, you can see how they have focussed on the left channel when going forward. It's where the Dutch look most vulnerable too with Dumfries missing a bit in defending transitions and Timber looking a little uncomfortable. Can Valencia exploit that area in the second half even further?

17:59 CET: It's been an enthralling first period in Doha. As you can see from the stats below, it's been an even contest possession-wise. After conceding an early goal, the Ecuadorians have really come back into the match and had the bulk of chances. They almost snatched a leveller right at the end of the half there but it was ruled out for offside.

First-half stats

17:49 CET: No Goal. Offside is called and that will be halftime. The Ecuadorians would have loved a goal going into the break and to be fair - they don't deserve to be behind but they remain so thanks to Gakpo's emphatic early strike. Stay tuned for the first-half stats.

17: 48 CET: GOAL! Estupinan gets a rather lucky touch on a driven shot in the box. He won't care though, they all count.

17:46 CET: There will be three additional minutes in this half.

17:43 CET: It's been an interesting tactical match-up. Both sides are cancelling each other out a bit with similar formations. The Dutch will be grateful for that early goal because it is not a match of many chances so far.

17:34 CET: Valencia and Ecuador have been attacking that left channel well and the Dutch look a little vulnerable down that side with Dumfries nowhere to be seen in defence and Timber a bit stretched when they break.

17:33 CET: Valencia is found in some space on the left and cuts inside to fire the ball at the near post bottom corner. Noppert makes a good save for the Dutch.

17:31 CET: The Dutch reassert themselves with a sustained attack but it leads to nothing. The referee is letting a few tasty tackles go and it promises to be a physical match.

17:27 CET: Ecuador are starting to get their feet on the ball more now and dominate possession. They are having some join down the left side and chances are coming.

17:25 CET: Good chance for Ecuador as they weave into a dangerous position but can't threaten the goal.

17:21 CET: 20 minutes in and it's been one shot and one goal in this one. Aside from Gakpo's lovely goal, both teams seem to be feeling each other out. I wonder if Ecuador will have the quality to take their chances when they come.

17:15 CET: Jurrien Timber ushers Valencia out of play with strength. Timber is another one who Van Gaal has brought into the side today - at the expense of De Ligt. He's not afraid to change things, Van Gaal, and the side looks better balanced today.

17:12 CET: Van Gaal made an interesting choice in dropping Janssen for Klaassen, it meant that Gakpo was pushed forward and into a lot more attacking responsibility for the Dutch today. He's clearly risen to that here already.

17:06 CET: GOAL! The Netherlands! Cody Gakpo picks the ball off Klaassen's toes and rifles into inside the post with a fantastic strike. What a start for the Dutch! It really was the first chance of the game and Gakpo has put that away with aplomb. Beautiful stuff by the elegant PSV forward.

17:05 CET: After a rather uneventful few minutes, Ecuador's right wing back has fallen into a heap in pain. It looks like he's picked up an injury.

17:00 CET: And we are underway! Ecuador kick off in their change strip of navy blue with white shorts. The Dutch play in their classic all-orange.

16:55 CET: The teams have emerged for the anthems here at the Khalifa International Stadium in Doha. Today's referee will be Mustapha Ghorbal of Algeria.

It should be an interesting affair. The Dutch have made a few changes to their team - which you can read about below - as they attempt to find their groove in this tournament. The Ecuadorians will still be on high after their opening win.

Team News

Ecuador’s veteran striker Enner Valencia (33), who scored twice on the opening day of the World Cup, is included in their lineup.

Valencia, pivotal to his country's World Cup hopes, limped off late in Sunday’s game against hosts Qatar with a knee strain and had a scan to see the extent of the injury but was declared fit for the game.

Ecuador have made one change with Jackson Porozo (22) replacing Romario Ibarra (28) in defence, while the Dutch have made three changes but again kept striker Memphis Depay (28) on the bench as he continued his recovery from a hamstring injury and is expected to be a second-half impact player.

Jurrien Timber (21) replaces Matthijs de Ligt (23) among the three centre backs, Teun Koopmeiners (24) comes in for Steven Berghuis (30) and Davy Klaassen (29) replaces Vincent Janssen (28), which means Cody Gakpo (23) shifts into the front line.

Ecuador: Hernan Galindez, Felix Torres, Piero Hincapie, Pervis Estupinan, Michael Estrada, Angelo Preciado, Jackson Porozo, Gonzalo Plata, Moises Caicedo, Jhegson Mendez, Enner Valencia (capt.)

Netherlands: Andries Noppert, Daley Blind, Nathan Ake, Virgil van Dijk (capt.), Jurrien Timber, Denzel Dumfries, Davy Klaassen, Teun Koopmeiners, Frenkie de Jong, Steven Bergwijn, Cody Gakpo

Introduction

Both the Netherlands and Ecuador will be looking at this match as a chance to secure a place in the Round of 16 if they win.

A draw would suit either, too, but the Netherlands will be hotly tipped to prevail in this Group A clash and anything less than a win for Louis Van Gaal's side would be worrying as they are expected to go far in the tournament.

The Netherlands were pretty disappointing against Senegal but managed to grab a 2-0 win late on in the game. Ecuador, the youngest side in the tournament, were surprisingly assured in their comprehensive opening night defeat of hosts Qatar.

The pressure is off the South Americans in this one - something which will suit them just fine.
