Napoli extended their lead at the Serie A summit to eight points following a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Atalanta at the Gewiss Stadium. The Partenopei remained one of two sides in Europe’s top five leagues to remain unbeaten in the league, as they continued their charge towards a first Scudetto since 1990.

Bergamo last witnessed a draw between these two Serie A titans back in October 2014, and considering the way the clash kicked-off, one could hardly predict how this one was going to turn out. A handball by Victor Osimhen handed Atalanta an early penalty, which Ademola Lookman converted with an unstoppable strike into the top right corner past a helpless Alex Meret. However, the Nigerian marksman quickly made up for his error, stunningly heading the equaliser from a pinpoint Piotr Zielinski cross to net his ninth goal of the season.

Osimhen then made everyone forget about his early shortcomings, zipping ferociously past Merih Demiral on the right wing and feeding Eljif Elmas in the box, allowing the Macedonian to bury the ball in the middle of the net to silence the home crowd.

Atalanta emerged after the restart eager to draw level, but needed to be wary of Luciano Spalletti’s men, who had scored 10 of their 16 goals on the road this term in the second half of games. Lookman wasted a great opportunity from point-blank range to equalise on the hour mark, crashing a rebound effort against the bar, before Rasmus Højlund sent his effort wide of the post, much to the dismay of the home fans.

Despite pushing for the equaliser, Gian Piero Gasperini’s men were unable to find a leveller, failing to win on home soil for the 13th time in 2022. Napoli on the other hand, got back to winning ways with a ninth successive league victory, their best run since the days of Maurizio Sarri to extend their lead over Atalanta in the title race at this early stage.
