Mallorca ended a six-match H2H losing run against Real Valladolid with a last-gasp 94th minute winner at the Son Moix.

World Cup winning and Mallorca-based Argentina boss Scaloni took the ceremonial kick-off in front of adoring home fans, who were hoping for a golden start here with their hopes of a first top-half La Liga (LL) finish since 2012 suffering a setback after they ended 2022 with a loss at Getafe. Their wishes were almost granted just five minutes in, when Dani Rodríguez raced through courtesy of a deflection, though he could only hit wide with Jordi Masip bearing down on him.

Soaking up Valladolid pressure before hitting back through lightning counters, that wouldn’t be the end of the Pirates’ chances as they continually broke the defensive lines. Amath Ndiaye was instrumental in their early siege but lacked the composure from 12 yards out after a driving run in one of Mallorca's clearer opportunities. Though the tempo didn’t settle, the visitors eventually did, and the first half descended into a tight, physical affair which perhaps explained the two-point gap between the sides in the standings.

The hosts began the second period the brighter and more inventive of the two sides as Vedat Muriqi, who scored the winner in the Pirates’ last home outing, became increasingly prominent. Introduced just before the hour mark, it was Valladolid’s Kike Pérez who nearly stunned the home faithful however, as he spun inside the penalty area and crashed a shot against the bar.

The Pirates never truly regained their first-half intensity though Kang-in Lee remained a threat for the lively hosts, whipping a delicious free-kick onto the head of Iddrisu Baba, who perhaps should have done better with his effort. Mallorca’s Tino Kadewere looked to have had the best of an understated finale, after he drove his shot straight at Masip, but there would be last-gasp drama as Mallorca struck the winner. Another Lee free-kick caused mayhem in the area and Abdón Prats powered a header home to break Valladolid hearts late on.
