The Brazilian was left to rue that missed opportunity 19 minutes from time, when Osorio headed home Lucas Cepeda’s cross to score his first Elche goal.
That set up a grandstand finish and Elche got the equaliser their second-half performance deserved seven minutes from time, as substitute Fer Nino sent a low shot into the bottom corner that gave Courtois no chance.
Madrid poured forward in search of a winner, and they found one in the first minute of stoppage time as Mbappe broke clear and squared the ball for Espi to finish into an empty net.
The victory puts Madrid behind Barcelona only on goal difference, while extending their unbeaten run against Elche to 20 games (W16, D4).
Meanwhile, Martin Anselmi is still awaiting his first win as manager of Los Franjiverdes, who are now bottom of LaLiga after six matches (D2, L4).
