Real Madrid paid a heartfelt tribute to Liverpool at the end of the second leg of their Champions League last-16 tie by playing the English club's anthem, 'You'll never walk alone' over the public address system. It was a gesture of the kind of dignity that they received at Anfield.

That day, hours before the match, Real Madrid lost their honorary president, Amancio Amaro. In the run-up to the match, Sir Kenny Dalglish went with a bouquet of flowers to the back of the stadium where the Real Madrid fans were gathered to pay tribute to the historic player and coach.

A gesture that the Madrid president Florentino Perez and the club were grateful for, and he wanted to repay as soon as he could. At the end of the match at the Bernabeu, instead of the usual centenary anthem, the Liverpool anthem was played.

The crowd, both home and away, began to applaud as the English sang it as they usually do at their home ground. "Liverpool did us a favour at Anfield when our honorary president passed away, it was a gesture of greatness and we wanted to reciprocate. They appreciated it and it was the least we could do. Clubs of this stature show their greatness with gestures like the one Liverpool made at Anfield," said Emilio Butragueno, Director of Institutional Relations.
