After the painful scenes at Cadiz yesterday, a medical emergency inside the opening minute was certainly not an ideal start.
Fortunately this incident was nowhere near as serious, and Getafe were the brighter of the two sides when play resumed.
Their pressure paid dividends when Borja Mayoral was felled in the area by Benat Turrientes, but as Mayoral dusted himself off to take, his strike was well stopped by Alex Remiro.
Surprisingly, that penalty was about the only action of the first half until Enes Unal stood over a 35-yard free-kick and unleashed an absolute rocket into the top corner of Romero’s goal to hand Getafe a half-time lead.
Unal has long been Getafe’s go-to man for inspiration, and the Turk was again tormenting Sociedad after the break, cutting a perfect ball back for Carles Alena to stroke home his first goal of the season from the edge of the box.
Getafe’s two-goal advantage lasted a matter of moments, as two of Imanol Alguacil’s substitutions combined, with Mohamed-Ali Cho floating a perfect cross onto the head of Brais Mendez, who powered home to halve the arrears.
Sociedad simply couldn’t live with Unal, who was having more of an influence on the game as it grew older and as he raced through on goal, he was unlucky to see his effort cannon back off the post.
He was almost left to rue that missed chance just seconds later as Sociedad broke and Mikel Merino floated a perfect cross onto the head of Alexander Sorloth, but the Norwegian’s header was easily stopped by David Soria.
Munir El Haddadi thought he had wrapped up the points 10 minutes from time, but the assistant’s flag swiftly cut short his celebrations. It didn’t matter though, as Getafe survived some scary moments to bring Sociedad back down to earth with a bang after their midweek victory at Old Trafford.
