Levante clinched a priceless 2-0 victory over Sevilla to boost their chances of avoiding relegation from LaLiga, securing only their second H2H win in 11 matches.

Levante were looking to build on Monday’s crucial 1-0 victory over Getafe, and were almost handed a golden opportunity to do so in the early stages of this relegation six-pointer.

Referee José Sánchez initially pointed to the penalty spot after feeling that Iván Romero was tripped in the box by Nemanja Gudelj. However, replays showed that there was little to no contact, and the decision was reversed by VAR.

That moment acted as a warning sign to Sevilla, as the hosts continued to look the most likely to break the deadlock.

Carlos Espí almost finished off a sweeping move when his low-driven finesse shot forced Odysseas Vlachodimos into a smart save before Levante finally broke the deadlock in the 38th minute.

Jon Ander Olasagasti was the architect as his wonderfully clipped pass dropped into the path of Romero, who slammed his powerful half volley into the back of the net to give his side a deserved 1-0 lead heading into half time.

Sevilla could only improve on a disappointing opening 45 minutes, and they created their best chance of the match straight after the break. Lucien Agoumé found Rubén Vargas with an inch-perfect through ball, but he lost composure and fired his left-footed shot high and wide of the target.

Los Nervioneses continued to look threatening, and Akor Adams had their next chance to equalise, firing his powerful long-range strike just inches over the crossbar.

At the other end, meanwhile, Levante had a golden chance to double their lead against the run of play in the 68th minute, but Andrés Castrín made a terrific last-ditch block to deny Espí.

Luis García threw on all five of his substitutes in the second half, including Alexis Sánchez, as Sevilla went in search of an equaliser, and they thought they had an opportunity from 12 yards when Pablo Martínez appeared to handle the ball in the box.

However, VAR correctly overruled calls of a penalty, and the visitors were dealt a further blow as Levante sealed the victory in stoppage time when Ugo Raghouber raced away and squared the ball to Romero for an easy tap-in.
