After the thrilling derby that ended in victory for Los Merengues (1-2), Atletico Madrid's Argentinian manager Cholo Simeone (52) was proud of his team and congratulated his colleague Carlo Ancelotti (63) for the tactics he employed.

"I have nothing to complain about. My players gave everything. Real Madrid have a very good direct game, the defence-attack transition is very quick and forceful. I like it because you can see a team that plays with an organised defence, counterattacks well and makes the most of their situations.

''Ancelotti does a great job because he manages to bring together players who play well with the ball, but also work in defence and counterattack accordingly.

''Their forcefulness is wonderful and I like to see a team that plays like that because it reminds me of us a few years ago, with Diego Costa and company, although we were criticised for being defensive, but when there is forcefulness, football is wonderful".

Despite the defeat, the Argentine tried to look on the bright side: "We didn't give up despite the 0-2 deficit and in the second half we improved our intensity when Cunha, Morata and Correa came on and gave the team life and aggression".

Speaking about Antoine Griezmann, who was a starter for the first time this season, he said: "Today we thought Griezmann could be a starter. He did a great job in several positions, first as a second striker and on the left wing in the second half".

Although he regretted that he could not link up with Joao Felix as in the Champions League match against Bayer Leverkusen: "We couldn't get them to connect as much as we wanted."

Simeone also lamented the absence of several of his players and the changes he had to make to the team for that reason: "Savic and Gimenez are important and we hope they can be with the team more this year because we miss them. Felipe had a good game against Vinicius and Witsel is playing out of position. Llorente played at full-back because I thought he had more options in his duel with Vinicius and he performed very well."

But he mentioned his footballing philosophy once again: "We compete every game giving our maximum. We've lost two home games against Villarreal and Real Madrid undeservedly. We'll keep working and we're only thinking about the game against Sevilla".

Ancelotti: "I can't ask for more from this team"

The Real Madrid manager was happy with his side's performance: "The team replaced Benzema well and all those who have played as centre-forwards have done it well. Today Rodrygo scored a spectacular goal and the quality of the squad is very high. Valverde and Rodrygo are very special. They are what the modern footballer has to be, with energy and quality. They can play in different positions and both have progressed a lot. We are delighted with them.

''The squad is very competitive even without Benzema, our most important player. There are players who can improve obviously, but I can't ask for more from this team, we have won every match so far, we are happy and I am proud to be their manager."

The Italian thanked Simeone for his words praising Real Madrid's tactics: "We managed to come out from the back well and we were comfortable having the possession. In the second half we stopped wanting to add damage and that affected us.

''We suffered at the end because Atletico pushed and created problems for us. We defended in a low block, we're used to that. It allowed us to control Joao Felix and Griezmann. To Simeone, I would say thank you very much for saying that we defended well, it's a compliment."

Vinicius, who has been the centre of the spotlight all week for his controversial dances when celebrating goals and during the game attempted a "Lambretta", he stated that "he could have done something else instead of the Lambretta, but he is Vinicius and I can't take his talent away from him because it allows us to score goals like the 2-0 that allowed us to win the derby".

Despite the fantastic start to the season, Ancelotti was cautious, saying: "Barcelona are doing very well, we are doing very well and Atletico haven't started so well, but it's a very strange season and you don't know what will happen after the World Cup. What has happened to them could happen to the rest of us later on. It's going to be a more competitive league than last year's".
