Ghana’s Black Starlets will face Ivory Coast in the semi-finals of the 2026 WAFU Zone B U17 Championship on Tuesday, with head coach Kassim Ocansey describing the encounter as more important than the final because of the qualification spot at stake.

The match will take place at the 4th August Stadium in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, with kick-off scheduled for 16:00 GMT.

Victory would secure Ghana a place in the tournament final and, more importantly, guarantee qualification for the 2027 U17 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.

Speaking ahead of the encounter, Ocansey stressed that reaching the continental tournament was the team’s primary objective.

“We’ve prepared very well for this game. This game is more important than even the final because the team that wins this game qualifies for the AFCON. If you don’t win here, whatever you have done in the tournament becomes Cos 90. So, we’ve prepared very well for it,” he said.

The Ghana coach also revealed that his technical team had closely assessed Ivory Coast ahead of the decisive encounter.

“We’ve watched them. We have seen their strengths and weaknesses and we have prepared for the game. They are not a bad side but, In Sha Allah, we will beat them to qualify for the AFCON,” Ocansey added.

The Black Starlets head into the semi-final unbeaten after topping Group A with seven points from three matches.

Ghana opened their campaign with a 1-0 victory over Togo before defeating Benin 3-1, with Alidu Issah scoring twice, and drawing 0-0 with hosts Burkina Faso in their final group match.

Ivory Coast, meanwhile, finished second in Group B after drawing 1-1 with Nigeria to set up the meeting with Ghana.

Promising winger Abdul Latif Wunzalgu has also expressed confidence ahead of the clash, declaring that his best performance of the tournament is still to come.

“Tomorrow’s game will be my finest,” he said.

Wunzalgu earned the Player of the Match award in Ghana’s opening victory over Togo and will be hoping to make another significant contribution against the Ivorians.

With a place at the 2027 U17 AFCON on the line, the Black Starlets will look to maintain their unbeaten run and secure Ghana’s return to the continental competition.
