The gap looked to be closing to five points when Julius Beck was upended in the penalty area by Mikael Dyrestam, and Arber Zeneli struck the resulting spot-kick confidently to give Elfsborg a 37th-minute lead.
Zeneli looked to have put the game beyond doubt midway through the second half, when Beck went to ground to beat the defender to a long ball forward, knocking it across for the Kosovo international to chip delicately over the goalkeeper.
The home side had come close on a couple of occasions, and perhaps it was no surprise they took a chance three minutes later, when a long throw wasn't properly cleared and after a few neat touches to keep the threat alive, Christoffer Styffe cushioned the ball down for Noah Christoffersson to volley home.
It was, perhaps, a bigger surprise they managed to complete the comeback just seven minutes later. William Hofvander played a hopeful ball down the right, which Christoffersson brought down after shrugging off his marker, before skipping past a defender, cutting infield and leathering the ball into the roof of the net from a tight angle.
Dyrestam almost provided the ultimate redemption late on, only for his close-range header to strike the post, as the points were shared following a brace apiece.
OIS end a run of four consecutive defeats and stay at the foot of the table but only on goal difference behind Halmstad, with both on six points.
