Orlando Pirates face uncertainty over their potentially decisive final Betway Premiership game of the season on May 23 after opponents Orbit College admitted they were still looking for a “suitable venue”.

They had hoped to play the game at the Royal Bafokeng Sports Palace in Rustenburg, but that venue is now unavailable until the end of June, according to relegation-threatened Orbit without giving a reason.

They are clearly looking for a venue that can hold over 40,000, with the possibility that it could be the game which coronates Pirates as league champions for the first time since 2012.

They will therefore likely be able to sell out the stadium many times over with Pirates fans flocking there to be part of the big day.

Durban’s Moses Mabhida Stadium could be an options, so could the 94,000-seater FNB Stadium in Soweto, close to Pirates’ Orlando home.

“Orbit College wishes to inform its supporters, stakeholders, members of the media, and the football community that the Betway Premiership fixture against Orlando Pirates scheduled for Saturday, 23 May at 15h00 will no longer be played at Royal Bafokeng Stadium,” the club said in a statement.

“This follows confirmation from the stadium management that the facility will remain unavailable until 30 June 2026. The Club is currently in the process of securing an alternative compliant venue capable of hosting a fixture of this magnitude.

“A final confirmation regarding the venue will be communicated by Friday, 15 May.”

If Pirates win their final two games of the campaign at home to Durban City on Saturday and away at Orbit, they will almost certainly be champions given their vastly superior goal-difference over current leaders Mamelodi Sundowns, who play their final league game tonight against TS Galaxy.
