Defeat in Iceland a week ago left Ilves needing a result back in Tampere, but a goalless first half meant time to get back on terms was at a premium. However, the moment the home fans were waiting for came early in the second half, when Jardell Kanga's pass found Jesse Kilo, who scored his first goal since May.
That was enough to send the match to extra time, in which Ilves looked to be the masters of their own downfall, as Faris Krkalic turned the ball into his own net, only for Tatu Miettunen to respond in the 113th minute.
Goudouss Bamba thought he had won the tie in the dying seconds, only for his goal to be chalked off, meaning the second leg went the way of the Lynx, but penalties hadn't been avoided.
Despite the late let-off, Stjarnan blinked first in the shootout, as Andri Bjarnason failed to convert the first spot-kick. The next eight were all scored, handing Kanga the chance to win it for Ilves, and he found the net to send Ilves into the next round, where they will face Rijeka of Croatia.
