It's hard to believe that, going into the final game of the 2025/26 Premier League season, there is still a chance that Tottenham Hotspur could be relegated to the second tier of English football for the first time in 49 years.

In truth, it's been an awful season for the Lilywhites, not helped by a ridiculously long injury list, which also played a part in Ange Postecoglou's inability to earn domestic success when he was at the club.

Spurs still need a point to survive

After he took the North Londoners to last season's Europa League title, things looked a little brighter, despite Spurs only escaping relegation by one place, albeit there was a 13-point gap to 18th-placed Leicester City.

Unfortunately, the club didn't build well enough from the European success, and things slowly began to unravel under Thomas Frank, a manager lauded for his tactical appreciation, but who had never managed a big club before, with respect to Brentford and his other previous employers.

Fast forward to the final game of the 2025/26 campaign, and Spurs still need at least a point against Everton to guarantee them Premier League football in 2026/27.

Fortunately for the club, Roberto De Zerbi has had an immediate impact as first-team manager. After the disastrous short-term reign of Igor Tudor, the Italian's brief was clear: Save Tottenham from relegation.

Vast improvement under De Zerbi

Although they lost their his game in charge against Sunderland, and the last game played at Chelsea, in between, the team from N17 beat Aston Villa and Wolves, whilst drawing with Leeds United and Brighton.

West Ham, who will go down in Tottenham's place if they fail to beat Leeds, have lost their last three games, ensuring that the advantage firmly remains with the North Londoners.

Spurs fans will be encouraged by the fact that Everton have won only one of their last 16 Premier League away games in N17 (D4, L11), losing their last four matches there by an aggregate score of 13-1.

Not to mention that this will be the 10th time that the Toffees have faced a side from London in the capital on the final day, and in the previous nine games, they've won just once (D2, L6) - against Fulham in 2008/09.

Everton haven't won in six games

Everton have also not won in their last six fixtures against any opposition (D3, L3), but Moyes hasn't gone seven Premier League games without a victory since 2023 when he was West Ham boss.

You have to go all the way back to 2010 for the last time he didn't manage a win in seven games with the Toffees, too.

Furthermore, the North West side has led at some point in all of their last three Premier League matches, but have failed to win any of them (3-3 v Man City, 2-2 v Crystal Palace and 1-3 v Sunderland). However, only in October 1999 did they lead, but failed to win, in four consecutive games.

Although Spurs lost on the final day last season (4-1 to Brighton), they've not lost on two consecutive final days since between 2007/08 and 2009/10, and should the hosts win on Sunday, it will actually be the first time since 2017/18 that they've managed to do the double over the Toffees.

A note of caution for the Lilywhites is that they've not won at home in the Premier League in the last 10 games (D4, L6), which is their longest run since 14 matches without a win in N17 between October 1993 and April 1994.

Richarlison needs his shooting boots on

Should they survive and finish 17th again, it will be the first time they've finished as low in consecutive English top-flight campaigns since between 1912/13 and 1914/15, when they ended those three seasons in 17th, 17th and 20th.

Tottenham will hope that top scorer Richarlison has his shooting boots on against his former club.

The Brazilian has 15 goal contributions to his name in the Premier League this season (11G, 4A), and has also scored four goals and assisted one more in his last five matches vs Everton.

James Maddison's return couldn't have been more timely for De Zerbi, as the Italian looks for some creativity to open the door for his side, though Spurs will have to do without the services of Xavi Simons, Wilson Odobert, Mo Kudus, Dejan Kulusevski, Ben Davies and Cristian Romero.

Romero heading to Argentina

Romero won't even be in attendance for the game, preferring to head to Argentina to watch his old side Belgrano play a title decider against River Plate.

Dominic Solanke faces a late fitness test, but it's doubtful that he'll play any part in proceedings either.

For the visitors, Jarrad Branthwaite and Jack Grealish are definitely out, whilst Idrissa Gueye also has a late test to determine his availability.

There have been at least three goals scored in the last three games between the teams, too, so this one could be a thrill-a-minute right up until the whistle goes for full-time.
