Viborg FF on Friday night were dealt a cruel blow to their aspirations of winning bronze medals in the Danish Superliga when they, for the first time, were defeated at home by Sonderjyske by 1-0.

Sonderjyske is back in the fight for medals in the Danish Superliga after a 1-0 win away at Viborg.

It was not long ago that Sonderjyske looked like a team that was completely out of the medal race after a disappointing 0-6 defeat away to Brondby.

But with Friday's win, Sonderjyske still has the opportunity to play a role in the battle for third place.

FC Nordsjaelland currently occupies the third spot with two more points than Viborg and Sonderjyske. However, FC Nordsjaelland has one game in hand and will take on FC Midtjylland on Sunday.

Viborg started Friday's match on a positive note and carved out a great chance after 17 minutes when Thomas Jorgensen produced a wonderful through ball for Asker Beck.

But Asker Beck, who scored twice in the last round's 3-3 draw against FC Midtjylland, lacked sharpness and kicked wide of the goal.

At the end of the first half, it was Sonderjyske's turn to dominate and create chances. Ten minutes before the break, Sonderjyske's winger Olti Hyseni poked the ball straight at Viborg keeper Lucas Lund with the goal at his mercy.

The woodwork then denied an effort from Sonderjyske's midfielder Sefer Emini, and Sonderjyske's forward Matthew Hoppe also managed to test Lund in the Viborg goal before the break, but the match remained scoreless.

Just four minutes into the second half, Sonderjyske made the most of their momentum to grab the lead when Hyseni squared the ball across the box for the onrushing Emini, who slotted the ball into the roof of the net.

After that, Viborg took control of the game, while the visitors heroically defended the narrow lead. Viborg striker Dorian Junior had a great opportunity in added time, but he headed the ball past the goal as Sonderjyske hung on for the win.
