Inter Turku missed the opportunity to take the lead from KuPS at the top of the Veikkausliiga as they opened their championship group account with a 2-1 loss at HJK.

HJK 2-1 Inter Turku

With KuPS only earning a draw at Gnistan the previous evening, a win for Inter Turku would give them a one-point lead after the first round of the second phase of the season, only their trip to Helsinki proved more difficult than KuPS'.

By half-time, that didn't seem to be the case, as the away side took the lead with nine minutes of a closely-contested first half to play. The ball was worked out to Albin Granlund on the right, and his cross was headed back across goal and in by Prosper Ahiabu.

FC Inter had early chances after the break to double their lead, but not taking them came back to bite in the 53rd minute, when Pyry Mentu got to the byline on the left and cut the ball back for Mads Borchers to guide home with a first-time finish.

Having been well on top for the majority of the second half, HJK turned the match on its head in the final 10 minutes, when a ball over the top was taken down by Nikolai Alho into the path of Kaius Simojoki, who coolly finished what turned out to be the winner.

It's a first defeat in six league games for the Turku side, and just their third in the league all season. Back-to-back wins have taken HJK to within two points of today's opponents and four from the leaders.
