Having conceded first in each of their previous two, and given Tottenham’s rather stale first-half performance, Antonio Conte (53) might have been thankful to reach HT level. Wolves looked tactically astute in the first period, nullifying Spurs’ attacking threat and creating openings of their own. By the 35th minute, the visitors had taken seven shots without reply, albeit without really troubling Hugo Lloris (35). As the break approached, Spurs attempted to make the most of their height advantage, manufacturing a half-chance from a looping Ivan Perišić (33) cross towards Kane that was tipped onto the bar by José Sá (29). At the other end, debutant Matheus Nunes (23) twice came close, directing a header narrowly wide before forcing a corner from close-range.
After an unsatisfactory first period from a Spurs perspective, Tottenham looked re-energised and almost took the lead when a diving Kane header clattered the crossbar. With an hour gone, the complexion of the game shifted to a far more open affair as Son Heung-min (30) struck the post and a breakthrough looked inevitable. Minutes later, a Kane header from a corner finally did the trick, beating Sá after a clever flick-on from Perišić at the near post - his 250th goal for the club.
Bruno Lage’s (46) side continued to probe, coming close from a Rúben Neves (25) free-kick, but the hosts did enough to claim a hard-fought three points. Victory sees Tottenham continue their unbeaten start to the season ahead of next week’s match against newly-promoted Nottingham Forest. Meanwhile, Wolves are now 10 league games without victory - their longest winless PL streak since returning to the top flight - having failed to convert their promising display into anything of substance.
