Alexander Zverev eased into the French Open quarterfinals after beating surprise package Jesper de Jong in straight sets at Court Philippe Chatrier: 7-6 (3), 6-3, 6-1.

106th-ranked 'lucky loser' Jesper de Jong was a sensation at the French Open, with the Dutchman flying past Stan Wawrinka and Federico Cina before impressively eliminating 15th-ranked Karen Khachanov in five sets in the third round.

Alexander Zverev, the highest-ranked player still in the main draw, had dropped just one set en route to the fourth round after beating Benjamin Bonzi, Tomas Machac, and Quentin Halys.

After being serenaded by the crowd, who wished him a happy 26th birthday in song, De Jong opened the match with an excellent service game to quickly take the lead against the heavily-favoured Zverev. After shocking the tournament favourite with an early break, De Jong stayed calm and grabbed a quick 3-0 lead after 12 minutes.

Zverev bounced back and broke De Jong on love to get back to within one game of the Dutchman, who recorded his first career win against a top-15 opponent just last Friday. After tying the match on breaks again, De Jong kept Zverev from taking the outright lead after impressively fending off two break points late in the opening set to move within one game of a set win.

After Zverev and De Jong kept each other in check, the ensuing tiebreak started in the Dutchman's favour after quick breaks, but Zverev soon recovered, with a perfect passing shot and an unforced error allowing him to erase De Jong's three-point lead. De Jong's chances withered after a double fault and an overhit forehand handed Zverev a 6-3 lead, as Zverev clinched the set by winning seven consecutive points.

Zverev cleaned up and showed why he's the current top dog at this French Open, with the German machine committing 12 fewer unforced errors and showcasing a dominant service game, winning 20 of 24 as he took the set with a break in the tenth game.

With De Jong losing control, Zverev overpowered the Dutchman as he looked determined to make it a quick set by producing his sixth love game and outscoring De Jong 16-1 over a span of four-and-a-half games.

The indomitable Zverev kept dominating throughout the set, forfeiting just one game en route to a 6-1 set win. Zverev has now reached the quarterfinals of the French Open for the sixth year running and will face teenage sensation Rafael Jodar in his maiden Grand Slam quarterfinal.

Meanwhile, Jesper de Jong makes a giant leap in the ATP Rankings. The Dutchman jumps up from the 106th to the 81st place.
