Brentford completed a league double over Southampton for the first time since the 1958/59 season, after Ivan Toney’s 16th Premier League strike of the current campaign and a late Yan Wissa goal guided the Bees to a 2-0 victory over the Saints.

After their 12-game unbeaten league run was ended by Everton at the weekend, Brentford were looking for a positive response at St Mary’s.

The visitors made an encouraging start, as Kevin Schade attempted to mark his first Brentford start with a goal, but he was unable to hit the target with a looping header.

And Gavin Bazunu, who received praise for his performance in Sunday’s goalless draw with Manchester United, was called into action in the 20th minute, denying Bryan Mbuemo’s left-footed strike with a fine reaction save.

However, there was nothing the Southampton goalkeeper could do to prevent Toney from opening the scoring just after the half-hour mark. Mbuemo’s inswinging corner found the head of Christian Norgaard, who neatly flicked the ball on for Toney to tap home.

The Saints went into the break without creating too many chances of note, but they went agonisingly close to finding an equaliser within three minutes of the restart when Che Adams saw his goalbound effort blocked on the line by Aaron Hickey.

The home manager Ruben Selles introduced the likes of Paul Onuachu and Theo Walcott from the bench to assist in Southampton’s desperate quest for an equaliser.

But it was Brentford who struck in stoppage time. Bazunu's goal kick was played back into his side's half and Wissa ran onto the ball past the defence to calmly secure all three points for the Bees in front of their travelling fans.

Although the Bees spent the majority of the second period camped in their own half, they wrapped up all three points in the seventh minute of stoppage time.

The Saints’ eighth home defeat of the  season leaves them rooted to the bottom of the table. Brentford, meanwhile, move up to eighth position and remain firmly in the hunt for the European places.
