A 95th minute leveller from Anthony Modeste secured an incredible late comeback for Dortmund against 10-man Bayern Munich to break a run of eight games without a win in Der Klassiker and keep the teams locked together in the Bundesliga.

While these two sides had been full of goals in recent weeks, there was precious little goalmouth action in the opening stages. Far from a timid affair though, challenges were flying in, resulting in three yellow cards distributed within 14 minutes, including one for Marcel Sabitzer within 90 seconds.

Dortmund full-back Raphael Guerreiro would be the first player to test either goalkeeper, as his powerful effort from the left was beaten around the post by Manuel Neuer.

Julian Nagelsmann’s men had offered very little in attack, but just after the half-hour mark the defending champions proved they only needed one chance to break the deadlock.

Bayern flooded the box with players to provide options for Jamal Musiala on the left, but the youngster picked out Leon Goretzka on the edge of the area, and the midfielder drove his effort into the bottom corner.

The Bayern boss was clearly unhappy with his side’s efforts before the break in spite of the lead, making three alterations to his side. Marius Wolf forced Neuer into a fingertip save.

Straight up the other end, Sadio Mane spurned a huge chance to double the Rekordmeister’s lead, slotting his diving header agonisingly wide of the post. Moments later, the visitors showed their ruthless streak to pull two goals clear.

Leroy Sane was allowed to shoot from the edge of the area and the ball looked well within the reach of Dortmund goalkeeper Alexander Meyer, but he failed to turn it round the post in a horror moment for the shot-stopper.

Just as Edin Terzic’s men looked dead and buried, 17-year-old Youssoufa Moukoko reduced the arrears.

The youngster linked up brilliantly with Modeste who had run the left channel before returning the ball to Moukoko who displayed tremendous ability to beat Neuer with his left foot.

Modeste missed a huge chance to equalise from point blank range, but his side were given a late lifeline when Kingsley Coman was sent off in the 90th minute.

With four minutes of stoppage-time, the hosts bombarded Bayern’s box, and in the 95th minute their pressure prevailed after a scramble in the box allowed Nico Schlotterbeck to cross to the back post where Modeste was waiting to ram home the equaliser and kickstart his Dortmund career in some style.
