Vlahovic and Milik on target as Juventus down Spezia

Juventus returned to winning ways in Serie A as Dusan Vlahovic’s spectacular free-kick and Arkadiusz Milik’s first goal for the club earned their side all three points in a hard-fought 2-0 success over Spezia.

With the Bianconeri struggling for clear-cut chances in the early stages, once again a piece of Vlahovic magic would break the deadlock.

Just as in their last game against Roma, the Serbian unleashed a ferocious free-kick, with the ball flying into the top corner from 25 yards.

Frustratingly for the home faithful, that would be the Old Lady’s only shot on target of the first half from yet another lacklustre display.

The lead was far from secure with Spezia looking a threat on the break, and Wojciech Szczesny was stretchered off with an apparent ankle injury, so there was still plenty of work for Massimiliano Allegri to do.

Juve set out to double their advantage after the break, with summer signings Angel Di María and Filip Kostic introduced shortly into the second half.

Vlahovic, rather unsurprisingly, looked the most threatening for the Bianconeri, with the Serb rising highest from a corner to head at goal, only to see his effort stopped on the line by Bartlomiej Dragowski.

Spezia carried plenty of attacking promise, but failed to register a single shot on target in the opening 75 minutes of the contest, perhaps highlighting the resilience of the Juventus defence, who held firm to continue their unbeaten start to the season.

New signing Milik came off the bench to add a second in stoppage time, showing tremendous composure to receive the ball with his back to goal, before spinning and providing a clinical finish.

Victory lifts the Old Lady into the top five, after a fifth consecutive victory over their opponents in Serie A. Spezia’s miserable away record continued, winning just one of their last nine on their travels, leaving them rooted in mid-table.
