The Danish men's volleyball team suffered their second defeat at the European Championship when they lost to Belgium. In the Finnish city of Tampere, Denmark lost 25-19, 20-25, 19-25, 23-25 on Tuesday afternoon. Nevertheless, the Danes remain in a strong position in their bid to advance at the tournament.

Following clear victories over the Netherlands and Estonia, Denmark have six points, enough for third place in a group which also includes Finland and Serbia.

Four of the six teams will advance to the Round of 16, which is being held in Italy. The Netherlands and Estonia have one point and zero points, respectively, heading into their fourth group-stage matches.

A win at the European Championship is awarded by three points, while a loss in five sets yields a single point. Consequently, a great deal would have to go wrong for Denmark to exit the tournament after the opening phase.

Before the tournament began, Sports Director Sebastian Mikelsons stated that advancing from the group stage would mark the greatest achievement in the history of the Danish national volleyball team.

However, the stakes regarding Denmark's volleyball future extend beyond the European Championship itself.

This tournament is the final opportunity for Denmark to earn world ranking points and potentially qualify for the 2027 World Championship.

So far, Denmark has climbed several spots during the European Championship and currently sits in 25th place following the latest update.

This marks only the third time the men's national team has participated in the European Championship, and the first time Denmark has qualified by finishing first in its qualifying group.

The championship ends next Saturday with the final and the bronze-medal match in Milan.
