Sampdoria lost a seventh consecutive Serie A (SA) home game as Kingsley Ehizibue’s 88th-minute strike earned a 1-0 victory for Udinese. La Samp are yet to reach the 10-point mark at the league’s halfway stage - the longest it’s taken them in their history.

Already languishing in the drop zone, further pressure was heaped on Sampdoria thanks to relegation rivals Hellas Verona’s victory earlier in the weekend. Far from wilting under the scrutiny, the hosts met fire with fire in a hugely positive start to the contest. Manolo Gabbiadini forced Marco Silvestri into a save at his near post inside the opening two minutes, before he curled just wide from range later in the half. Filip Đuričić spurned La Samp’s best opportunity though, placing his shot just wide after being released on goal by Sam Lammers.

Udinese would eventually get a greater stranglehold on proceedings, but failed to stress Emil Audero in the Sampdoria goal in a disappointing first half from Andrea Sottil’s men. There was little improvement at the start of the second period from the Bianconeri either, as their struggling hosts continued to have the better chances. Perhaps the best opportunity of the game so far fell to substitute Ronaldo Vieira. The former Leeds United man was the beneficiary of a poor Udinese clearance, but he failed to keep his half-volley down and blazed over from inside the area.

A succession of stoppages in the closing stages for injuries and substitutions deprived the contest of any flow, and made chances hard to come by. Unable to create one of their own, a slice of fortune fell Udinese’s way as they stole victory at the death. An innocuous ball into the area was inadvertently headed goalwards by Harry Winks, and Ehizibue was lying in wait to turn home from close range. As a result, the Bianconeri win for the first time in 11 league games, leaving La Samp winless in seven and goalless in six on their own turf.
